Bali to the Gili Islands by Helicopter
Sanur to Gili Trawangan in 30–40 min instead of 2–2.5 hours on a fast boat. Gili landing sites are limited and approved in advance.
A helicopter flies from Sanur to Gili Trawangan in 30–40 min. A fast boat takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on the water, plus the drive to the harbour and the check-in. The helicopter costs $2,700 for the whole aircraft, which is $675 each for four guests or $1,350 each for two. The boat costs a fraction of that, so it wins on budget and flexible days; the helicopter wins on time, luggage handling, small children and swell. Here is the honest comparison.

Choose the helicopter when the hours matter more than the money: a flight home from Lombok, a wedding start time, small children, a lot of bags, or a forecast that makes you nervous about the strait. It saves at least an hour on the move and usually more once harbour check-in is counted. Choose the fast boat when you have a spare half day, light luggage and a tight budget.
The price comparison is not like-for-like, because the helicopter is priced for the whole aircraft while the boat is priced per ticket. A helicopter for up to 4 guests costs $2,700 one-way from Sanur to Gili Trawangan, and that figure already includes the helicopter's flight back. Four guests share it at about $675 each. Boat fares are set by each operator and are a fraction of that figure, so check the current fare before you decide.
Both options leave one question open: where you land. The Gilis have no cars or scooters, and helicopter landing sites on them are limited and need prior approval. That makes the arrival plan part of the comparison, covered below.
Helicopter figures are for the Sanur to Gili Trawangan flight. Boat figures are typical ranges from Serangan or Padang Bai to the Gili side; your operator's timetable decides the rest.
| Factor | Private helicopter | Fast boat |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the move | 30–40 min in the air, 93 km in a straight line | About 2–2.5 hours on the water |
| Door to door | Add 15–20 minutes at the pad for weighing, briefing and headsets, plus the drive to the pad | Add the drive to the harbour, check-in ahead of the sailing and the walk to the beach or jetty |
| Cost, whole group | $2,700 one-way for the helicopter, up to 4 guests. A same-day return with a one-hour wait is about $3,000 | Fare per ticket, set by the operator |
| Cost per person, 2 guests | $1,350 each | One fare each, a fraction of the helicopter figure |
| Cost per person, 4 guests | $675 each | One fare each, the same as for 2 guests |
| Luggage | Soft bags only, small hold, limited by combined weight | Larger bags are generally carried; check your operator's limits |
| Sea conditions | Not affected by swell. Wind, rain and visibility matter, and the pilot decides | High swell and wind can delay or cancel a sailing, and the Lombok Strait has strong currents |
| Departure time | Your slot, sunrise to sunset, agreed with the quote | Set by the operator's timetable |
| Arrival | Approved landing site only; Gili sites are limited, so we confirm before you pay | Beach or jetty on the Gilis, then bags by hand or horse cart |
More options (plane, public ferry) are compared in five ways to the Gili Islands and in Bali to Lombok by ferry, boat, plane or helicopter.
The helicopter price is shared by the guests on board. These are guide prices for the whole aircraft, one-way, and each includes the helicopter's flight back.
| Route | Air time | Whole helicopter | 2 guests, each | 4 guests, each |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sanur to Gili Trawangan | 30–40 min | $2,700 | $1,350 | $675 |
| Airport area to Gili Trawangan | 30–45 min | $2,850 | $1,425 | $715 |
| Airport area to Lombok airport | 35–50 min | $3,250 | $1,625 | $815 |
| Lombok airport to Gili Trawangan | 20–25 min | $1,750 | $875 | $440 |
Six guests fly in the larger class at about 1.4 times the 4-seat rate, which lowers the cost per person for big groups; see helicopter classes. Any pad away from the airports is confirmed before you pay. How each figure is built is on the price page.
Think of the helicopter premium as buying back time for each guest. With four guests the helicopter costs $675 each, against a boat fare that is a fraction of that. In return nobody queues at a harbour, nobody carries a bag along a pier and the day does not start with a sailing time. For two guests it is $1,350 each, which is a harder sell unless the day has a deadline.
The honest test is this: what is the first two hours of your arrival day worth? On a honeymoon, a family trip with young children or a short stay of two nights, those two hours are a quarter of the trip. On a three-week backpacking route they are nothing.
A third option splits the trip. Fly from the airport area to Lombok International Airport in 35–50 min, from $3,250 for the whole aircraft, then drive. It removes the sea crossing but keeps the Lombok road, so it suits guests staying on the Lombok mainland, such as Kuta Lombok or Mandalika, more than guests heading to the Gilis. The Bali to Lombok page has the detail.
A helicopter is not the right answer for every crossing, and we would rather say so now than after you have booked.
The helicopter wins when time, luggage handling or sea conditions are your constraint, when you are four or more sharing the cost, or when the arrival itself is part of the plan, as it is for a proposal or a wedding party.
The three Gilis, Trawangan, Meno and Air, lie off the north-west coast of Lombok, and none of them has motorised vehicles. Bags move by hand, by bike or on a horse cart. By boat you arrive on the beach or a jetty and make that last stretch yourself. By helicopter the question is where the aircraft can put down.
Landing sites on the Gilis are limited and need prior approval, so we confirm a named site, the owner's agreement and the operator's clearance before you pay. If no site works for your date, there are two fall-backs. Land at Lombok International Airport and fly the short hop on from there, which the Lombok airport to Gili route covers: 20–25 min, from $1,750. Or land on an approved coastal site on Lombok and finish by boat. The Bali to Gili Islands page and the Gili Islands guide list the options.
The Lombok Strait is about 20 km wide at its narrowest, deep, and fast with current. Fast boats cross it on a timetable, but high swell and wind can delay or cancel a sailing, and the ride can be rough for anyone prone to seasickness. A helicopter does not feel the swell, but strong wind, heavy rain or poor visibility can stop it, and the pilot makes that call on the day.
Morning is the most reliable window for both. The wind is usually lighter and mountain cloud has not built yet. If a flight cannot go, we move it to the next suitable slot or refund the part that was not flown. Ask your boat operator what its cancellation rules are, since they differ.
If safety questions are on your mind, our list of what to ask a helicopter operator works for the crossing too.
If the morning of your arrival is blocked by a sailing, what does that cost you? If the answer is nothing, take the boat.
Four guests share the helicopter at $675 each. Two guests pay $1,350 each. Heavy or hard-sided luggage points to the boat.

Yes. A helicopter flies Sanur to Gili Trawangan in 30–40 min, against about 2–2.5 hours on a fast boat. Add 15–20 minutes at the pad for the briefing; the boat also needs harbour check-in and the drive to the harbour.
The helicopter is $2,700 one-way for the whole aircraft, up to 4 guests, which is about $675 each for four. Boat fares are per ticket and well below that, so check the operator's current fare.
Only on an approved site. Landing sites on the Gilis are limited and need prior approval, so we confirm the exact spot before you pay. If none is available we land at Lombok airport or an approved coastal site and you continue from there.
On the helicopter, soft bags only in a small hold, limited by combined weight, so tell us the number of bags and rough weights. Fast boats generally take larger bags, but limits differ by operator.
Neither is guaranteed. Boats can be delayed or cancelled by swell and wind; helicopters can be stopped by strong wind, rain or poor visibility. Morning slots are the most reliable for both, and we refund the part of a helicopter flight that is not flown.
For solo travellers and couples on a budget, for light luggage, and for days with time to spare. The helicopter pays off for groups of four or more, for tight connections and for families with small children.
Send your start point, the place you want to reach, the guest count and the bags. We reply on WhatsApp the same day with the pad, the aircraft and a fixed price for the whole helicopter.
