The flight

What the Flight Over the Lombok Strait Is Like

The helicopter lifts off from a pad in south Bali, turns east past Sanur and heads out over open water, with Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan to the right. The Lombok Strait is only about 20 km wide at its narrowest, between Nusa Penida and Lombok, but it is deep and its tidal currents are strong. It also lies on the Wallace Line, the boundary where Asian and Australasian wildlife meet. From the air you can often see tide lines and eddies on the surface where the currents meet.

On the Lombok side the cone of Mount Rinjani, 3,726 m, comes into view on a clear morning. The pilot checks wind and sea state before takeoff; a strong afternoon breeze can add minutes, so morning departures are the most reliable.

Where you land decides the rest of the day. Lombok International Airport at Praya is the default: it has a controlled runway and ground handling, and it suits guests heading to Kuta Lombok, Mandalika or the south. For Senggigi and the north-west coast we need a resort or a private landing site with the owner's agreement; for the Gilis read Bali to the Gili Islands.
