Is It Safe to Fly a Helicopter in Bali? 12 Questions for the Operator

Whether a helicopter flight in Bali is safe depends on the operator, the pilot, the aircraft, how weight is handled and the weather call on the day, and you can check most of that before you pay. Ask for the operator's name and air operator certificate (AOC) number, the pilot's licence and type rating, how the aircraft is maintained, the weather limits, the insurance and the equipment for flying over water. This guide lists twelve questions, the red flags and what we do on the booking side. It contains no statistics, because a number without context misleads.

Is It Safe to Fly a Helicopter in Bali? Judge the Operator, Not the Headline

No honest operator tells you that flying carries no risk. What they can tell you is who flies, what aircraft, under what licence, and what limits they apply. That is what this page helps you check. It has no accident figures and no comparisons with other transport, because a number taken out of context says little about the flight you are about to book.

Most tourist helicopter flights in Bali use single-engine light helicopters, flown by day under visual flight rules, from sunrise to sunset. The questions below apply to any operator you speak to, including ours.

A short definition helps. An AOC, or air operator certificate, is the approval that lets a company carry passengers for hire. It is issued by the civil aviation authority and typically names the aircraft types and kinds of flying the operator may do. Ask who holds it, and ask for the number.

The list

Twelve Questions to Ask Before You Pay

Ask in writing, so you have the answers on WhatsApp. A licensed operator expects these questions and answers them without fuss.

#AskA good answer sounds likeRed flag
1Who operates the flight, and what is the AOC number?A company name and a number, sent with the quote"We work with partners" and no name
2Does the AOC cover passenger flights in this helicopter type?Yes, and the type is namedNo clear answer
3What is the aircraft registration?A registration, which for Indonesian aircraft begins with PKRefuses to give it
4Who is the pilot, and what are their licence and type rating?A commercial helicopter licence, a type rating for this aircraft and a valid medical"All our pilots are experienced" and nothing else
5How much experience does the pilot have on this type and in Bali conditions? An honest figure, plus recent flying in heat and hillsDodges the question
6How is the aircraft maintained?Scheduled inspections by an approved maintenance organisation and a current airworthiness certificateTalks only about how new it looks
7How are weight and balance handled? They ask for guest and bag weights and may weigh youNever asks
8What are the weather limits and who decides? The pilot decides, against set limits for wind, visibility and cloud"We always fly"
9What happens to my money if the flight cannot go?Reschedule or refund the part not flown, in writingNo stated policy
10What insurance covers passengers?A passenger liability policy, with a certificate available on requestDoes not know
11What does the pre-flight briefing cover?Seat belts, doors, headsets, how to approach and leave the aircraft, what to do in an emergencyNo briefing, or one rushed in a minute
12What equipment is on board for over-water flights?Life jackets for everyone, floats if fitted, a routing that stays within reach of land where possible"There is no need"

Our charter page explains how a booking runs. Ask for the operator name and licence number with the quote and compare them with what you see on the day.

Pilot and aircraft

Pilot and Aircraft: What the Answers Should Tell You

The pilot. A passenger flight needs a commercial pilot licence for helicopters, a type rating for the helicopter being flown and a valid medical certificate. Experience matters in two ways: hours on the type, and recent flying in Bali's conditions, which include heat, hills, sea breezes and fast-building mountain cloud. There is no single magic number of hours. What you want is a clear answer, not a brush-off.

The aircraft. Age alone says little. A well-kept older helicopter can be a better choice than a younger one with patchy records. What matters is whether it is maintained to a schedule by an approved organisation and carries a current airworthiness certificate. Our guide to helicopter types explains the models you are likely to meet and how many guests each takes.

Weight and balance. In Bali's heat, weight is the limit. Hot air gives less lift, so the pilot needs to know combined passenger and bag weights before the flight. An operator that never asks is a bigger worry than one that asks every time. Read weight limits and baggage for how we handle it.

Weather and water

Weather, Volcano Alerts and Over-Water Flights

Weather is the pilot's call. We watch wind, cloud and the strait forecast, but the decision to fly or not is the pilot's, on the day, and a cancelled flight means the pilot applied the limits. Be wary of any promise that the flight always goes. Mountain cloud builds from late morning, so mornings are more reliable; the best-time guide has details.

Volcano alerts can change a route. Alerts for Agung, Batur or Rinjani are followed on the day, and a route may be changed or a flight stopped. See volcano flights and ash advisories.

Over water, ask for the equipment and the routing. Crossings such as the Lombok Strait and the Nusa Penida crossing are over deep water with strong currents. Ask whether life jackets are on board and worn, whether floats are fitted, how far the route stays from shore and how the pilot would handle a change in wind.

Red flags

Red Flags When You Compare Quotes

  • No operator name or AOC number, even after you ask twice.
  • No questions about weights or bags. The pilot needs them to load the aircraft.
  • A promise that the flight goes in any weather. The pilot decides, and honest operators say so.
  • A price far below the others, with no explanation of aircraft class, pad or minutes.
  • Pressure to pay the full amount at once, with no written quote naming the aircraft class, pad, time and cancellation terms.
  • A promise to land on a public beach, in a temple ground or in a national park. These are not approved landing sites, and we do not offer them.
  • A rushed or missing briefing on the pad before you board.
  • Refusal to put the refund terms in writing. If it will not be written down, it may not be honoured.
Booking side

What We Do on the Booking Side

We plan the route, price and timing with you on WhatsApp. The flight itself is operated by a licensed Indonesian air operator, an AOC holder.

Name the operator on request

When the quote arrives, ask for the operator's name and its licence number. We encourage every guest to do this and to compare both with what they see at the pad.

Ask for weights and bags

We ask for approximate weights and the number of soft bags, and we choose the aircraft class to suit. The quote states the class.

Write down the pad, the time and the terms

The quote names the pad, the aircraft class, the time, the price and the cancellation terms. For landings away from an airport or hotel pad we confirm the site before you pay.

Check conditions the day before

We look at wind, cloud, the strait forecast for island flights and volcano advisories, and confirm the pick-up time.

Respect the pilot's call

If the pilot says no, we reschedule or refund the part not flown. Nothing is paid through this website; payment details come with the quote.

Your part

Your Own Part: Insurance, Briefing and Behaviour

Read your travel insurance before you book. Some policies exclude or limit helicopter flights, and the wording on scenic flights differs. A short message to your insurer settles it, and the answer is worth having in writing.

At the pad, listen to the briefing and ask questions. Approach the helicopter only when the pilot signals, from the front, and never walk toward the tail. Keep seat belts fastened, keep loose items zipped away, keep windows and doors shut, and tell the pilot at once if you feel unwell. Our what to wear and bring list covers the practical side.

In a life-threatening emergency call 112, Indonesia's national emergency number, and your travel insurer's 24-hour assistance line first. We can find a helicopter for an urgent same-day flight that is not medical, but a medical evacuation needs an approved medical crew and the insurer's approval, and we never promise one. See urgent helicopter flights and medical emergencies on the islands.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to fly a helicopter in Bali?

It depends on the operator, the pilot, the maintenance, the weight handling and the weather call. No honest operator promises zero risk. Ask for the AOC number, the pilot's licence and type rating, the maintenance arrangements and the weather limits, and compare the answers with what you see on the day.

What is an AOC and why should I ask for it?

An AOC is the air operator certificate that allows a company to carry passengers for hire. Asking for the holder's name and number shows that the operator is licensed. A licensed operator gives it without fuss.

Will the helicopter fly if the weather is bad?

No. The pilot decides against limits for wind, visibility and cloud. If the flight cannot go, we reschedule it to the next suitable slot or refund the part that was not flown.

Does my travel insurance cover a helicopter flight?

Not always. Some policies exclude or limit helicopter flights, so check the wording and ask your insurer before you fly. Ask the operator what passenger insurance it holds as well.

What equipment should be on board for flights over water?

Ask whether life jackets are on board for every guest, whether floats are fitted, how far the route stays from shore and what the pilot's plan is for a change in wind. Crossings to Lombok and Nusa Penida are over deep water with strong currents.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call 112, Indonesia's national emergency number, and your insurer's 24-hour line first. We can arrange an urgent same-day helicopter for non-medical needs. A medical evacuation needs an approved medical crew and the insurer's approval.

Ask for the Operator Name and Licence Number

Send the date, guests and route. We reply the same day on WhatsApp with the aircraft class, the pad, a fixed price and, on request, the operator's name and licence number. Nothing is paid on this site.
