Sunset Helicopter Flight
A golden-hour flight over the Bukit cliffs that lands at sunset. 18 or 30 minutes, whole helicopter, up to 4 guests.
The best time for a helicopter flight in Bali is 07:00–10:00 for volcanoes, Ubud and the islands, and the last hour before sunset for the coast and temples. April to October is the clearest season. November to March brings afternoon showers, but mornings are usually fine. A golden-hour flight lifts off 20–30 minutes before sunset and lands as the sun goes down, from $750 for 18 minutes. Send your date on WhatsApp and we choose the slot.

Two windows beat everything else. The first runs from about 07:00 to 10:00. The air is clear, the volcanoes stand out before cloud builds on them, the rice terraces hold soft light and the air is usually smoother than later in the day. The second is the last hour before sunset, when the Bukit cliffs and the west coast turn gold and the sun sits low over the sea.
Midday is the weakest slot for hills and the strongest for sea colour. High sun makes the shallows around the islands glow, but mountains are often wrapped in cloud by then, and hot air gives a helicopter less lift. That second point is why we ask for approximate weights and why a full load flies better at 08:00 than at 14:00.
Flights can lift off from sunrise, which is about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June and July. In the first half hour the sun is low and the light flat, so we usually suggest 07:00 unless you specifically want first light on a ridge or a valley mist. Flights end at sunset; there are no night flights.
Times are WITA (UTC+8). Bali has no daylight saving, so the table is the same all year; only sunrise and sunset move.
| Slot | Time | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| First light | Sunrise to about 07:00 | Long shadows over the terraces, quiet pads, calm air | Low flat light for the first half hour; valley mist can hide the terraces |
| Prime morning | 07:00–10:00 | Mount Batur, Mount Agung views, Ubud, the island crossings, the grand circle | The slot every visitor wants: book early in July, August and the Christmas weeks |
| Late morning | 10:00–12:00 | Sea and reef colour with the sun high; Bukit coast | Cloud starts to build over the mountains, thicker in the wet season |
| Midday and afternoon | 12:00–about 16:00 | Coast flights when the sky is clear; flexible dates | Heat, harsher light, afternoon showers from November to March |
| Golden hour | Take-off 20–30 minutes before sunset | Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and the Bukit cliffs; couples; proposals | The flight must end at sunset, so a late arrival cannot be made up |

Bali lies about 8 degrees south of the equator, so the day stays close to 12 hours all year, but sunrise and sunset still move by 35–45 minutes between June and December. Use these times as a guide.
| Time of year | Sunrise | Sunset | Arrive at the pad | Golden-hour take-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June and July | about 06:35 | about 18:05 in June | about 17:20 | about 17:35–17:45 |
| December | about 05:50 | about 18:40 in late December | about 17:55 | about 18:10–18:20 |
| Other months | between the two | between the two | 45 minutes before sunset | 20–30 minutes before sunset |
We confirm the exact sunset time for your date in the quote and count back from it. A golden-hour flight costs $750 for 18 minutes and $1,250 for 30, against $650 and $1,150 in the day.
The dry season gives the clearest air. The wet season is flyable, with mornings the safest slot.
| Months | Season | What to expect | Planning tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| April–June | Dry | Clear coast and long views; the season builds toward peak | Two to four days ahead is enough on an ordinary date |
| July–August | Dry, peak demand | The clearest weeks of the year and the busiest | Golden-hour slots go first: plan ten to fourteen days ahead |
| September–October | Dry | Clear air, fewer queues for the best slots than in the peak weeks | Good for volcanoes and the grand circle |
| November–March | Wet | Afternoon showers, thicker mountain cloud, mornings usually fine | Choose a morning and keep a back-up day |
| Christmas to New Year | Wet, peak demand | Fully booked flights and hotels; showers are still possible | Book ten to fourteen days ahead and accept a flexible hour |
Mount Batur stands 1,717 m inside its caldera, Mount Agung reaches 3,031 m, and on Lombok the Rinjani summit is 3,726 m. All three collect cloud as the day warms. In the dry season the cones are often clear until late morning; in the wet season cloud can sit on them well before midday. That is why the Mount Batur flight is a morning product, and the same logic applies to the Ubud flight over the valleys.
Volcano activity is a separate question. Alerts for Agung, Batur or Rinjani can change a route or stop a flight, and the pilot follows the latest advisory on the day. Our note on volcano flights and ash advisories explains how this works.
If cloud covers the cone when you arrive, the pilot decides. We move the flight to the next suitable slot, often later the same day or the next morning, or refund the part that was not flown.
A sunset helicopter flight in Bali is not a flight after sunset. It is timed so that you lift off 20–30 minutes before the sun goes down and land as it reaches the horizon. You get the warm side-light on the coast, the long shadows on the cliffs and a copper sea, and the aircraft is back on the ground in daylight.
Uluwatu and Tanah Lot are the two routes built for this slot. The Uluwatu tour follows cliffs that face the evening sun, and the Tanah Lot tour flies the west coast, where the sun drops straight into the sea. Both are on the sunset flight page.
Be realistic about the limits. Haze on the horizon can flatten the colour on some evenings, cloud can hide the sun itself while the coast stays well lit, and a late arrival at the pad cannot be recovered, because the flight must end by sunset. For a proposal, count back from the sunset time and arrive early; our proposal planning guide has a timeline.
Inland (Batur, Ubud, grand circle) means morning. Coast (Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Bukit) means the last hour before sunset, or a clear morning.
Do not leave the flight for the last day. A flexible first third of the trip gives us a second chance if cloud or wind moves the first slot.
Arrive at the pad about 45 minutes before sunset for the briefing and headsets. Take-off follows 20–30 minutes before sunset.
We reply the same day with the aircraft, the pad, the time and a fixed price. A deposit holds the slot. The flight planner gives a quick estimate first.
Between 07:00 and 10:00 for volcanoes, Ubud and the islands, and the last hour before sunset for the coast and temples. Midday suits sea colour but mountains often carry cloud by then.
April to October, the dry season, gives the clearest air. July and August are the clearest and the busiest, so book golden-hour slots ten to fourteen days ahead. Other dry-season months are easier to book.
Yes. From November to March showers come mostly in the afternoon and mornings are usually fine, so we place flights early and keep a back-up day. If the weather stops a flight, you are refunded for the part that was not flown.
About 20–30 minutes before sunset, so the flight ends as the sun reaches the horizon. You arrive at the pad about 45 minutes before sunset. An 18-minute golden-hour flight starts at $750 for the whole helicopter.
No. Tourist flights run in daylight only, from sunrise to sunset. If you want the evening light, book a golden-hour flight that ends at sunset.
Flights can lift off from sunrise, about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June and July. The best light and air start at about 07:00, so we suggest that for most guests, and sunrise for a specific shot.
Tell us the date or month, how many guests and what you want to see. We reply the same day on WhatsApp with the time, the aircraft and a fixed price. Nothing is paid on this site.
