Straight answer

Where the Ubud Flight Starts, and Why the Quote Names the Pad

Most of our south Bali flights lift off from a helipad on the Bukit. Ubud is 35 km away in a straight line, about 14–20 min in the air one way by our planning figures. If this tour took off from the Bukit, most of 12 minutes would go on crossing the island. So the Ubud flight is planned with an Ubud-side start and priced on its own, at $500.

We do not name a pad on this page, because the approved pad can change with the date and the aircraft. The quote names it before you pay anything, together with the drive from your villa. If the pad is a long way from where you stay, we say so and suggest an alternative, such as a helicopter transfer from the airport or the longer Mount Batur flight.

What 12 minutes does not do

It does not include a landing, it does not reach Mount Batur, and it is not a transfer. If you want to land at an Ubud villa, read how villa landings are approved first.

What you fly over

Three Green Places and What to Look For in Each

One 12-minute loop gives you a Tegalalang helicopter flight, an Ayung river helicopter view and the Ubud rice terraces from the air. Here is what to look for in each.

Tegalalang terraces

The terraces lie 9 km north of Ubud. From above they read as contour lines, each curved step a different green, gold or flooded silver depending on how far the crop has grown. Neighbouring plots are often at different stages because the water is shared by schedule. Café decks and swings along the ridge look like small boxes.

Ayung river gorge

West of the town the river has cut a steep, forested slot. From above you see the water as a brown ribbon at the bottom, the trees closing over the sides and resort roofs lined up on the rim. Mist can lie in the gorge in the first hour after sunrise.

Campuhan ridge and Ubud

Campuhan means the place where two rivers meet, and the grass ridge runs between their valleys. The walking path shows as a thin pale line. South of the centre, the dark green block is the Sacred Monkey Forest; the rest is roofs, temples and rice plots.

Light

Why Morning Wins: Light and Cloud From Sunrise to Midday

Sunrise falls at about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June and July. Flights can run from sunrise, but the best air in the hills is from about 07:00.

  • Mist and first lightValleys often hold mist until the sun clears the ridges. If the pilot is happy with visibility, the terraces can look wet and silver. We may suggest 07:15 instead.
  • The best windowLong shadows draw the terrace steps. On a clear dry-season morning, heading north from Ubud, Mount Batur (1,717 m) stands ahead and Mount Agung (3,031 m) farther to the right.
  • Still good, warmer lightShadows shorten and colours flatten a little. Visibility is still excellent, and the villages are awake.
  • Cloud starts to buildOver the hills cloud forms from late morning, earlier in the wet season. The pilot may still fly, but the volcano views are the first to close in.
  • Showers more likelyFrom November to March afternoon showers are common. We offer morning slots first for that reason.

Booking

How to Book a Morning Flight Over Ubud

Message the date and the villa area

Say which part of Ubud, Sayan, Tegalalang or Payangan you stay in. The pad depends on it, and so does the drive.

Pick the hour

We suggest 07:15 to 08:30 for the clearest air. If you prefer to sleep in, 09:30 usually still works. Late morning carries more cloud risk.

Check the pad in the quote

You get the pad name, the meeting time, the aircraft class and a fixed price. Ask for the operator's name and licence number then.

Deposit, then the evening-before check

The deposit holds the slot, and the quote says how to pay it. The evening before, we look at the forecast and confirm the time.

Before you fly

What to Wear and Carry for Rice-Terrace Photos

  • Wear a dark top. You shoot through the glass, and a dark top cuts reflections.
  • Charge the phone, clear space for video. Twelve minutes is short, so you will want burst mode and a clear memory card.
  • Skip hats and long scarves. Downwash on the pad grabs them, and a wrist strap keeps the camera safe.
  • Tell us your weights. They decide the aircraft class, and the quote states it.
  • Add the photographer only if you want a landing set. A ground photographer ($250) works only at an approved landing site. In the cabin you shoot yourself. Tips are in the photography guide.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Ubud helicopter tour?

$500 for the whole helicopter, about Rp 8,900,000, for a 12-minute flight with up to 4 guests. Four share it at $125 each, two at $250 each.

Where does the Ubud helicopter tour take off?

From an Ubud-side pad that is named in the quote, not on this page. The approved pad can change with the date. We tell you the drive from your villa before you pay, and we offer another option if the pad is far.

Will the rice terraces be green when I fly?

They are green or gold or flooded all year, because crops are planted in stages. Fields are greenest in the wet season, November to March, and clearest to see from April to October. Expect a mix of colours from plot to plot.

Can I fly Ubud and also see Mount Batur?

On a clear morning Batur is visible from the 12-minute route, but you do not get close. For the crater, the lake and the Kintamani rim book the 30-minute Batur flight, which passes the Tegalalang terraces on the way.

Can the helicopter land at my Ubud villa?

Only if the site is approved: the owner agrees and the operator has cleared the landing. Steep slopes, tall trees and cables are common around Ubud. Send the villa name and a photo of the lawn and we check it.

Is the Ubud flight good for a proposal?

Yes. A 07:30 flight over the terraces gives soft light and no crowds, and it is one of the ideas on the proposal page. A bouquet can wait at the pad.

What if cloud or rain stops the flight?

The pilot decides. We move the flight to the next suitable slot, often the next morning, or refund the part that was not flown.
