Mount Batur Helicopter Tour: Crater Lake and Caldera in 30 Minutes

The usual way to see Mount Batur is a sunrise trek that starts in the dark. A Mount Batur helicopter tour takes 30 minutes: the 1,717 m cone, the crescent of Lake Batur, the Kintamani rim and the Tegalalang terraces on the way, from $1,150 for the whole helicopter. It works only in clear air, so we book mornings and check the volcano advisories before each flight. Send your date and hotel area on WhatsApp.

The route

The Batur Route in Order: Plain, Terraces, Rim, Caldera

Marks are approximate and count from take-off at a pad on the central side of the island.

Mount Batur is 67 km from the Bukit in a straight line, and our planning figure for that leg alone is 20–30 min. A 30-minute flight cannot spend that much time crossing and still circle the volcano, so the pad for this tour is chosen nearer the highlands where an approved one is available. The quote names it, and if it is far from your hotel we say so and give the drive time.

  1. Minute 0–8, the plain. The helicopter climbs north-east over villages and rice plots toward the highlands. The land rises and the villages thin out.
  2. About minute 6–9, Tegalalang. The famous terraces slide underneath, so photograph them early. Their steps are easiest to see in side light. See the Ubud tour for what to look for.
  3. About minute 10–12, the rim. The ground climbs to the Kintamani rim, then drops away into the caldera. On the approach from the south-west the lake is on the right, and the cone is straight ahead.
  4. About minute 12–22, cone and lake. The pilot circles at the permitted height and distance. Look for dark lava fields from past eruptions running toward the lake, the pale line of the rim road, and on some mornings steam from vents near the crater. On the far side stands the rim ridge with Mount Abang.
  5. On the horizon, Mount Agung. On clear mornings Bali's highest volcano, 3,031 m, rises to the east. Right-hand seats see it first on the approach, and it is usually capped by cloud after mid-morning.
  6. About minute 22–30, the return. The helicopter descends from the rim and flies the way it came, with the plain opening out below.
Cloud

Cloud and Clear Air at Batur by Time of Day

Mountain cloud builds from late morning, earlier in the wet season. These are typical patterns, not forecasts.

TimeWhat is typicalWhat we do
06:30–08:00Clearest air. The cone is sharp, and mist can lie on the lake. Our first choice. Take-off from about 07:00 gives the best margin.
08:00–10:00Good air. Cloud can start to gather on the rim.Take off by 09:00 for margin. We offer 07:30 and 08:30 first.
10:00–12:00Cloud often builds around the summit and over the caldera.Only if the morning forecast is clear. The pilot may refuse on the day.
AfternoonCloud and showers are common, more so from November to March. Not offered unless the forecast is clear.

April to October is clearer. If you have a fixed travel day, send two possible dates and we hold a back-up.

Volcano rules

Volcano Rules: What We Check and What Can Change the Flight

Any Bali volcano helicopter flight depends on the volcano agency. Batur and Agung are monitored volcanoes, and Indonesia's volcano agency (PVMBG) publishes alert levels, and aviation notices cover ash. Agung's eruptions in 2017 to 2019 closed Bali's airport several times, so we look at the notices on the morning of every volcano flight, not only the day before.

What we check

  • Current alert level and any ash notice for Batur and Agung.
  • Cloud base and visibility at the caldera rim, from the morning forecast and the pilot's own look.
  • Wind on the rim, which affects turbulence over the caldera.

What can change

  • A higher alert or an exclusion zone, which moves the route or the day.
  • Ash or a steam plume, which the pilot stays clear of.
  • Cloud over the cone, in which case we wait an hour, switch to the Ubud terraces, or move the flight.

We do not promise the crater rim at low height. The pilot keeps to the permitted distance and makes the final call. If a flight cannot run, we reschedule or refund the part that was not flown. More detail is in our guide to ash advisories and volcano flights, and questions to ask an operator are in the safety guide.

How to Book a Weather-Dependent Flight

Send two dates, not one

A volcano flight depends on cloud. Give a main morning and a back-up, and your hotel area so we can pick the pad.

We check the forecast and the advisories

The reply names the pad, the aircraft class, the time and a fixed price. We re-check the volcano notices on the morning.

Deposit holds the slot

The quote carries the payment details for the deposit. This site takes no money.

Go or no-go the evening before and again at dawn

We tell you at both points. If the answer is no, you move to the back-up or the refund of the unflown part.

Before you fly

What to Prepare for a Highland Flight

  • Sunglasses. The lake throws glare back at the cabin.
  • Phone on a wrist strap. Shoot through the glass in a dark top to cut reflections.
  • Eat light. Thirty minutes with turns over a caldera suits a light breakfast. Mention it beforehand if anyone is prone to motion sickness.
  • Weights in the message. They decide the class. Altitude and heat reduce what a light helicopter can carry, which is why weights matter more in the highlands.
  • Skip hats and loose scarves. The rotor blast on the pad can snatch them, so keep a phone and sunglasses in a zipped pocket.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Mount Batur helicopter tour?

$1,150 for the whole helicopter, about Rp 20,500,000, for a 30-minute flight with up to 4 guests. That is $290 each for four or $575 each for two.

Can the helicopter land on Mount Batur or at Kintamani?

Not on the summit, the crater or at public viewpoints. Landings happen only at approved sites such as a resort pad or private land where the owner agrees and the operator has cleared the landing. A Kintamani helicopter flight here means a flight over the rim, not a landing. See helicopter Kintamani for what is realistic.

Is it safe to fly near an active volcano?

Both Batur and Agung are monitored. The pilot stays outside any exclusion zone and clear of ash and steam, and the flight does not run when the advisories or the cloud say no. Ask the operator for its licence number when you request the quote.

What if the volcano is hidden by cloud?

We wait an hour if the forecast allows, switch you to the lower-cost Ubud terraces flight at $500, or move the Batur flight to your back-up date. Any part not flown is refunded.

Can we fly Mount Agung instead?

Agung is Bali's highest and holiest mountain, and routes near it depend on the alert level. On a clear morning you see it from the Batur flight. Read the volcano advisory guide before choosing.

What time is best for the Batur flight?

Take-off about 07:00 to 08:30. Flights can start at sunrise, which is about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June and July, but the clearest air is from about 07:00. Late morning carries more cloud.

Is 30 minutes enough, or should I take the 60?

Thirty minutes covers the caldera well. The 60-minute grand circle adds Jatiluwih, Tanah Lot and the south coast, and is worth it if you want the whole island in one flight.
