Mount Batur Helicopter Tour
30 minutes over the Batur caldera, its crater lake and the Kintamani rim, with the Tegalalang terraces on the way. Mornings, in clear air.

Helicopter Kintamani flights reach Ngurah Rai Airport in 20–30 min; the same trip is 90–120 minutes by car. We can fetch you from an approved site on the caldera rim or near Lake Batur, or you drive to a pad lower down. The 30-minute Batur circuit starts at $1,150 for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests. Send the date, guest count and where you are staying, and the quote names the pick-up site or pad.
Kintamani is the village strip along the rim of the Batur caldera. Below the rim lies Lake Batur, and out of the lake rises Mount Batur, 1,717 m, with dark lava from past eruptions on its slopes. Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak at 3,031 m, stands to the south-east when the sky is clear. The air up here is clearly cooler than on the coast, and a jacket is normal at breakfast.
Guests stay on the rim or beside the lake for the view, for the trek (sunrise climbs of Batur start in the dark), or to break up a long overland route. Others come for the day from Ubud or the south coast. Cloud is the catch: it fills the caldera from late morning, so the clear views come early.
A helicopter changes the arithmetic. Kintamani to the airport is 90–120 minutes by car and 20–30 min by air. Three plans use that gap:
A Kintamani helicopter landing needs an approved site: a rim hotel or restaurant with a flat lawn, a private plot, or a field where the owner agrees and the operator clears the landing. Roughly 25–30 m of flat ground with no wires or tall trees close is the rule of thumb. We do not land on the volcano's slopes, on trekking paths or in temple grounds.
If no site works, you drive to a pad: 90–120 minutes to the airport area, longer to the Bukit. The exact pad is written in the quote. In remote places like this the first or last leg is often what makes the helicopter worth it, because the flight itself replaces the longest part of the road.
How the helicopter reaches Kintamani is part of the price. The quote shows where it starts from and lists any positioning as a separate line, so you can compare it with a scenic loop from the south.
Thin air matters too. On the rim, at well over 1,000 m, a helicopter has less power in reserve than at sea level, so weight counts for more. We ask for weights and may suggest the 6-seat class even for four guests.
Batur and Agung alert levels decide where the helicopter may fly. If an alert closes the crater area, we offer a lake and rim route or move the date. Our guide on volcano flights and ash advisories explains how this works.
From the Kintamani rim to eight destinations: the volcano, the highlands, the coasts and the airport.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Batur | 4 km | 6–11 min | from $650 |
| Mount Agung | 22 km | 11–15 min | from $1,000 |
| Ubud | 30 km | 13–20 min | from $1,300 |
| Bedugul | 19 km | 10–15 min | from $950 |
| Jatiluwih | 27 km | 12–20 min | from $1,250 |
| Amed | 37 km | 14–20 min | from $1,300 |
| Lovina | 36 km | 14–20 min | from $1,300 |
| Ngurah Rai Airport | 59 km | 20–30 min | from $1,900 |
These are straight lines on the map, and the minutes count time in the air only. The fares cover the empty flight back, and an hour's wait adds $300. Kintamani to the airport and back with that wait is about $2,200. The price page shows how each number is built.
A sample plan; the real times come with your quote.
Crater, lake and caldera wall in clear early light. A way to see the cone, the crater and the lake as one picture.
The volcano can join Jatiluwih's terraces and the Bedugul lakes in one long flight, with the route set together on WhatsApp. Lake Beratan is 10–15 min from the rim.
Land at an approved site near an Amed bay on the black-sand coast, with Agung behind you. The road takes about 1.5–2 hours.
A flat private plot, a table, flowers and a view of the caldera, if an owner agrees. Sites are approved case by case.
Typical daytime estimates for a start on the rim. Mountain roads are slow.
| From Kintamani to | By road | Helicopter air time | One-way, whole helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ngurah Rai Airport | Car 90–120 min | 20–30 min | $1,900 |
| Ubud | Car about 1–1.5 h | 13–20 min | $1,300 |
| Seminyak | Car about 2–2.5 h | 20–25 min | $1,750 |
| Uluwatu | Car about 2.25–3 h | 25–35 min | $2,300 |
| Amed | Car about 1.5–2 h | 14–20 min | $1,300 |
| Lovina | Car about 1.5–2 h | 14–20 min | $1,300 |
Shared by four, Kintamani to Amed is about $325 each. A car is cheaper; the helicopter wins on the long legs, where the road takes the best hours of the day.
The rim has space: some restaurants, lodges and private plots have level ground. It also has hazards. The edge drops steeply into the caldera, and gusts roll over the wall, so a landing spot is chosen well back from the edge and into the wind. Morning air is calmer than afternoon air.
Temples line the rim, and the lake is sacred to many Balinese. We do not land in temple grounds, and the pilot keeps clear of ceremonies. Trekking paths and the crater itself are off limits for landing. Lakeside lodges at the bottom of the caldera have flatter ground but narrower approaches, and each site is checked one by one.
To understand what a site needs, read how landing at a villa or hotel works. Send the lodge or plot name and a photo of the open area, and we say yes or no before you pay.
Fly early. Between 07:00 and 10:00 the crater, the lake and Agung are usually clear, and the air is calm. From late morning cloud builds and fills the caldera, most often from November to March. The dry months of April to October give the longest clear windows, and July and August are the busiest weeks for both flights and trekkers.
Late in the day the rim can catch low sun over Lake Batur, but cloud often closes the highlands by then. For golden hour we usually suggest a coast flight and a morning on the rim; our guide to the best time for a helicopter flight in Bali compares months and times of day.
Name the hotel, lodge or plot, give the date and the number of guests, and add rough weights. If you want a pick-up on the rim, add a photo of the flat area.
The quote gives the pick-up site or pad, the aircraft class, the route and one price. Private sites can take a few days to clear.
A deposit holds the slot. The day before, we look at the forecast and the volcano bulletin and confirm the time.
Cloud or an alert can stop a flight. We then move it or refund the part not flown.
Yes, at an approved site: a flat lawn or plot on the rim or by the lake where the owner agrees and the operator clears the landing. We do not land on the volcano's slopes, trekking paths or temple grounds. We confirm the exact spot before you pay.
The 30-minute circuit is $1,150 for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, which is about $290 each. A pick-up on the rim may add positioning time, shown on its own line in the quote.
About 20–30 min over roughly 59 km, against 90–120 minutes by car. One-way from $1,900 for the whole helicopter. Add 15–20 minutes for pick-up and shutdown.
Flights may run from sunrise, about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June. The clearest air is from about 07:00. For a sunrise at the summit, the trek on foot is the usual choice; the helicopter shows the whole caldera in daylight.
Volcano alert levels can change or close a route. We then fly a lake and rim route, move the flight or refund the part not flown. We check the bulletin the day before and again on the morning.
Light layers and flat shoes. It is cooler than the coast, especially before 09:00. Windows stay shut in flight, and hats and loose scarves do not suit the rotor wash on the pad.
Tell us where you stay on the rim or by the lake, how many guests and the flight you want. We reply the same day with the site, the aircraft and a fixed price.
