Helicopter Flights From Amed & East Bali
Skip the 2–3 hour road: private helicopter between Amed and the airport, Mount Batur, Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands, with the landing site confirmed first.

Amed is 2–3 hours by road from Ngurah Rai Airport. A private helicopter flies there in 25–35 min with Mount Agung, 3,031 m, rising on your left for the last stretch. The whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, starts at $2,300 one-way. Tulamben, Candidasa and Sidemen sit on the same map, and landing at a dive resort needs approval, so send us the name when you ask.
No scheduled flights serve east Bali, so the real choices are a road, a boat for a short stretch, or a hired helicopter. Times are estimates from the airport area.
| Option | Time on the move | What it takes | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private helicopter | 25–35 min in the air | A pad at the airport end and an approved landing site in east Bali | $2,300 one-way for the whole helicopter; with a one-hour wait and the flight back, $2,600 |
| Private car with driver | 2–3 hours each way | A full day for a day trip: 4 to 6 hours of the day sit in the car | One fare per car |
| Fly one way, drive the other | 25–35 min plus 2–3 hours by road | Works if you want the road once, with stops at the coast on the way back | Still the full one-way helicopter price, because the aircraft flies back empty |
| Day trip by tour van | 2–3 hours each way plus stops | Fixed pick-up times, shared with other guests | Fare per person |
The one-way helicopter price already pays for the aircraft's flight back, so flying one way and driving the other does not save money. A same-day return with a wait is the better use of a helicopter. Other east Bali details are on the Amed area page.
The helicopter lifts from the pad in your quote and heads north-east, passing inland of Sanur and following the Gianyar and Klungkung coast. The Sidemen valley opens on your left with its stepped rice fields, while Padang Bai harbour, where the boats to Lombok and the Gilis leave, and the resort strip at Candidasa slide by on your right.
Then Mount Agung stands up. At 3,031 m it is Bali's highest and holiest mountain, and it is active: its eruptions between 2017 and 2019 closed the airport several times. On a clear morning the cone is sharp and the slopes are bare of cloud, which is why east Bali flights go early. The pilot decides how close to fly, and that distance changes with the wind and the volcano status.
Amed comes last: a long thin coast of dark volcanic sand, with jukung fishing boats pulled up in rows above the waterline and the sea dropping off quickly into deep blue. Tulamben lies a short hop up the coast, where the Liberty shipwreck sits just off the beach and is a well-known dive site. Where you land is the question the rest of this page answers.
Each place has a different kind of ground. We confirm the exact site before you pay; the list below is what is realistic, not a promise.
A narrow strip between hills and sea with dive resorts, small hotels and villas. Space is tight. Realistic: a resort with its own cleared area, or a field uphill where the owner agrees. Public beaches are out. Airport to Amed is 71 km in a straight line.
Dive resorts along a black volcanic beach, a short hop from Amed. Landing works the same way: a resort lawn or a nearby field with approval, and a car for the last minutes if the site is not on the shore.
A resort strip nearer the airport: 20–25 min in the air and from $1,750 one-way. Good for guests who want east Bali without going all the way to Amed. Hills press close to the sea, so check the site first.
A quiet valley of rice terraces with a view toward Agung. Farmland landings are possible when the owner agrees and the operator clears the spot. Ask us about a morning landing for breakfast and a walk.
If you stay in Amed for a few nights, these are the flights people add. Distances are straight lines; the pilot's routing around cloud and the volcano adds minutes.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Agung | 17 km | 10–15 min | from $950 |
| Candidasa | 22 km | 11–15 min | from $1,000 |
| Padang Bai | 27 km | 12–20 min | from $1,250 |
| Mount Batur | 33 km | 13–20 min | from $1,300 |
| Ubud | 48 km | 20–25 min | from $1,750 |
| Nusa Penida | 51 km | 20–25 min | from $1,750 |
| Gili Trawangan | 42 km | 15–25 min | from $1,550 |
Each one-way price already pays for the aircraft's empty flight home. Amed to Gili Trawangan is a long way by road and boat; landing sites on the Gilis are limited and need prior approval. See Bali to the Gili Islands.
Based on a same-day return with a wait. Cloud builds around Agung from late morning, so we fly early and return before it thickens.
For example: Seminyak villa to a dive resort in Amed, 4 guests, 4 soft bags, 20 June, return after lunch. Or name your own pick-up, such as the airport.
Your quote lists the pad, the landing site, the aircraft class, the timings and one fixed price. If Amed has no site we can approve, we suggest Candidasa or a nearby field.
The quote carries the payment details, and the website takes no money.
Be at the pad before 07:00 with soft bags only. The pilot checks weights and runs the briefing. If cloud or an alert gets in the way, we move the flight.
Over the Bedugul and Munduk lakes to the north coast in 20–30 min, instead of a 3-hour drive.
From the Bukit pad to an approved site on Penida in 14–20 min, with Kelingking and Crystal Bay in view on the way.
Sanur to Gili Trawangan in 30–40 min instead of 2–2.5 hours on a fast boat. Gili landing sites are limited and approved in advance.
Across the Lombok Strait in about 35–50 min instead of a half-day by boat or ferry.
25–35 min in the air from the Ngurah Rai Airport area to Amed, against 2–3 hours by road. Count a quarter of an hour at the pad on top of that.
The price starts at $2,300 one-way, covering the whole helicopter and up to 4 guests; split four ways that is about $575 each. Add a one-hour wait and the flight home and you pay $2,600. Waiting beyond that is $300 per hour.
Yes, if the resort has a clear area the owner approves and the operator signs off the landing. Amed is a narrow strip, so some resorts have no room. Send the name and we check; the landing page explains what an operator looks for.
Flights run only when the pilot is satisfied with weather, visibility and the volcano status. Agung is active, so an alert can change the route or cancel the flight. Ask the operator for its licence number; our guide on what to ask an operator lists the questions.
Yes: Amed to Gili Trawangan is 42 km and 15–25 min in the air, from $1,550 one-way. Landing sites on the Gilis are limited and need prior approval, so we agree the site before you pay.
Early. Between 07:00 and 10:00 Agung is usually clear and the air is calm. April to October is the dry season with the clearest views. In the wet season, showers and cloud build earlier, and we keep a back-up day.

How Agung, Batur and Rinjani alert levels and ash advisories change helicopter routes, and what we do when a level moves.
How landing at a villa or hotel works: the 25–30 m clear area, owner consent, operator clearance, and a nearby pad plus car when the site cannot take one.
