Ubud Helicopter Tour
12 minutes over the Tegalalang rice terraces, the Ayung river gorge and the Campuhan ridge, flown in the soft light of the morning.

A Bali airport to Ubud helicopter flight takes 13–20 min from Ngurah Rai, where the same trip by car takes about 60–90 minutes. The whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, is $1,300 one-way. Ubud is hilly, wooded and full of river gorges, so landing near your villa needs an approved site; we confirm it before you pay and offer a pad on the edge of town with a car for the last stretch when the villa cannot take one.
Car times are daytime ranges and move with traffic. The last stretch into Ubud is slow whatever you ride.
| Option | Time on the move | What the trip involves | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private helicopter | 13–20 min airborne | Pick-up at the airport pad, a briefing, then a landing on an approved site near Ubud | $1,300 one-way for the whole helicopter, about $325 each for 4 guests |
| Private car or taxi | About 60–90 minutes by road | Door to door with luggage, no landing permission needed, heavy traffic on the last stretch | A fraction of the helicopter price |
| Shared shuttle | Longer than a private car, with several drop-offs | Fixed departures, shared seats | Lowest cost per person |
| Drive in, fly a scenic loop later | About 60–90 minutes by road, then a short flight | Keeps the car for the transfer and spends the helicopter money on a sightseeing flight, the 12-minute Ubud scenic from $500 | Car fare plus $500 for the whole helicopter |
The honest summary: a car is cheaper, and the helicopter buys back roughly an hour of road. The airborne figure excludes 15–20 minutes at the pad. If you only want to see Ubud from above, the Ubud helicopter tour costs far less than a transfer.
The helicopter lifts off at the airport and heads north-north-east. For the first minutes you cross the built-up strip around Kuta and Legian and the western edge of Denpasar, a pattern of rooftops, temple courtyards and the traffic you are skipping. Then the roofs thin out, the first wet-rice fields open up in the Gianyar lowlands, and the land begins to rise toward Ubud.
Near Ubud the terrain folds. Narrow river gorges, including the Ayung on the west side, cut through green ridges, and villas and temples sit along them. Seen from the air, the town looks smaller than it feels from a car. The Tegalalang terraces lie 9 km north of the centre. They are not on the straight line from the airport, but a routing past them adds 8–12 min each way and is priced by the extra minutes.
Morning is best: flights between 07:00 and 10:00 have the clearest air, and mountain cloud over the highlands builds from late morning, especially in the wet season, November to March.
We do not promise a pad in the centre of Ubud. These are the realistic choices, from most convenient to most reliable.
Some estates have a lawn or levelled terrace of roughly 25–30 m across. Most Ubud properties sit on ridges and in gorges with tall trees and cables close, so each site is checked and the answer can be no. See how landing at a villa works.
A flat plot where the owner agrees and the operator clears the landing. It keeps the helicopter away from the dense centre and shortens the drive to most hotels.
The most reliable plan: land at an approved pad and finish by car. A private car at the pad is an add-on, from $50, priced by area and vehicle.
If no site is approved, drive in and book the Ubud scenic flight for another day. It is a round-trip sightseeing flight, from $500, with no landing at Ubud needed.
Straight-line figures from Ngurah Rai Airport. Inland pads outside the airport are confirmed before you pay, and the volcano flights are described on the Mount Batur tour page.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubud | 29 km | 13–20 min | from $1,300 |
| Tegalalang | 37 km | 15–20 min | from $1,350 |
| Kintamani | 59 km | 20–30 min | from $1,900 |
| Mount Batur | 61 km | 20–30 min | from $1,900 |
| Bedugul | 53 km | 20–25 min | from $1,750 |
| Jatiluwih | 42 km | 15–25 min | from $1,550 |
Each one-way price already covers the helicopter's empty flight home. Waiting for you at Ubud for one hour and flying back costs about $1,600 in total, and each extra hour on the ground is $300. The price page shows how the numbers are built.
A fixed start time at a retreat or a spa booking is easier to hit when the road is off the schedule.
A ceremony with a set time is the classic case. See helicopter weddings and the larger class on the helicopter types page.
Fly in from the airport and out to the next place, for example to the coast, rather than doing the Ubud road twice.
For example: arrival 10:20 on 14 July, 4 guests, 4 soft bags, villa near Sayan.

On the pad the pilot weighs bags, briefs you and hands out headsets. If wind or cloud make the flight unsafe, we move it or refund the part not flown.

Skip 2–3 hours of road: east Bali, Mount Agung and the black-sand coast in 25–35 min.
About 13–20 min in the air for 29 km. Add 15–20 minutes at the airport pad for the briefing and bags. The same trip by car takes about 60–90 minutes in the daytime.
From $1,300 one-way for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, which is about $325 each. That already pays for the empty flight home. If the helicopter waits one hour and brings you back, the total is about $1,600.
Only if the villa has a flat, cleared area of roughly 25–30 m across, no overhead lines or tall trees close, and the owner and the operator agree. Many Ubud sites cannot meet this. We say so before you pay and propose an edge-of-town pad plus a car; read can a helicopter land at my villa for the rules.
Not on the straight line from the airport, but we can route past them for the extra minutes. For a full terraces flight, the Ubud helicopter tour is built around them.
It saves about an hour of road at $1,300 for the whole helicopter. For two people with no deadline, a car is cheaper. It makes sense for a group of four, a fixed event time or a bad-traffic day.
The helicopter cannot fly after sunset, so a late arrival goes by road. We can move the flight to the next morning, or you can book the transfer for a daylight departure later in the trip.
Tell us your flight number, guests, soft bags and where you stay in Ubud. Within the day you get the landing answer, the aircraft class and a fixed price.
