Helicopter Komodo Labuan Bajo
Padar, Pink Beach and the Komodo coast by helicopter, either flown from Bali in legs or chartered after a scheduled flight. Always by quote.

Sumba is 454 km from Bali and Sumbawa sits between Lombok and Flores, so a helicopter to either is an expedition: several legs, planned fuel stops, overwater crossings and permits, all priced by quote. The reward is the Weekuri lagoon and the Sumba savanna, Moyo island and the Tambora crater. This page says who the flight suits, what the planning involves and when a scheduled flight is the better plan.
These are the farthest islands we plan from Bali, and the plan is closer to an expedition than a tour. Sumba has savanna hills in the west, tall-roofed village houses and the Weekuri lagoon; its Pasola festival falls in February and March. Sumbawa has Moyo Island off its north coast and the Tambora volcano, 2,850 m, whose 1815 eruption left a wide caldera and was felt across the world the next year.
A helicopter makes sense when you need an aircraft in a place with few roads, a fixed group on a short schedule or a camera platform. It suits film and photo crews who need aerial coverage of a remote landscape, small groups with a charter budget who want to see Moyo, Tambora and Sumba in a few days instead of weeks, and expedition planners who want a ground party supported from above.
It does not suit a single traveller who wants a quick scenic ride. For that, a scheduled flight to Tambolaka plus a local driver is the better, cheaper plan, and we say so in the reply. The honest rule: if one hour in the air is all you want, Sumba is not the island to start with; try a Bali flight from the tour list.
| Target | What it is | Timing | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sumba savanna and villages | Rolling grass hills in the west of the island, with villages of tall thatched roofs | Hills are gold in the dry season and green after the rains | Open country with few approved landing sites outside the airport at Tambolaka |
| Weekuri lagoon | A natural sea-water lagoon on the coast, with the open sea beyond a rock bar | Clearest in the dry season, early in the day | Landing near the lagoon only on a cleared private site, confirmed before you pay |
| Pasola festival | A traditional horseback festival on Sumba in February and March | Falls in the wet season, so weather needs a spare day | A crowded ceremony; we do not fly low over it |
| Moyo Island | A largely undeveloped island off the north coast of Sumbawa, with forest and reefs | Dry season for the clearest water | Sensitive area; flown on an approved route, with no landing |
| Mount Tambora | A 2,850 m volcano with a huge caldera from the 1815 eruption | Early morning, before cloud fills the caldera | An active volcano's alert level decides; no landing on the rim |
Budgeting figures only. A real plan splits these distances into legs with fuel stops.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lombok International Airport | 122 km | 35–50 min | from $3,250 |
| Labuan Bajo | 520 km | 2.2–3 hours | from $12,000 |
| Sumba (Tambolaka) | 454 km | 1.9–2.7 hours | from $10,450 |
Distances are straight lines. The Lombok row shows the first obvious stop on the way east; the operator chooses the real stops. Prices exclude the fuel stops, positioning and permits and are a guide, not a quote. Moyo and Tambora lie between Lombok and Flores on this line, so legs there are quoted individually.
If the helicopter positions on Lombok first, the second part of the trip looks like this.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sumba (Tambolaka) | 334 km | 1.4–2 hours | from $7,800 |
| Labuan Bajo | 398 km | 1.8–2.3 hours | from $9,350 |
Guide figures if the helicopter is positioned on Lombok first. Neighbouring Flores has its own plan in the Komodo and Labuan Bajo guide.
A far-island quote is built from the answers to six questions. We ask them before we name a price:
Send a window of dates rather than a single date, rank your targets and say what you will do on the ground. Every extra target adds a leg or a weather window, so a ranked list lets us price the core plan first and the extras as options.
An illustration of how the legs could be laid out, not a timetable. The real stops depend on the aircraft, the forecast and the permits.
| Way | How it works | Time and effort | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled flight to Tambolaka, then a driver | An airliner to Sumba's airport, then a hired car with a driver | The simplest plan; roads between sights take hours | Airfare per person plus a car by the day |
| Ferry and road to Sumbawa | A ferry from Lombok across the Alas Strait, then long roads | Slow; Sumbawa is a long island | Fares per person plus road transport |
| Liveaboard or boat charter | A boat that works the coast between the islands | Several days; weather and sea state decide | Per cabin or per boat |
| Private helicopter, multi-leg | A planned expedition from Bali or Lombok | Two to four days with a weather buffer | By quote; build from the guide prices plus stops and permits |
For most visitors the first row is right. The helicopter is for crews and groups who need the air.
How we price a multi-stop plan: flying time, standby and the empty flight back.
Film and photo crews planning a remote shoot: camera positions, flight windows and weather days.
The nearest far-island plan, with the same fuel-stop logic. Labuan Bajo to Tambolaka is 35–50 min in the air.
The first leg of nearly every far-island plan, priced and timed like a normal transfer.
April to October is the dry season. Sumba's hills turn gold, Weekuri's water is at its clearest and the air over Tambora is steadier. November to March brings rain, green hills and cloud on the volcano, and the Pasola festival falls in this wet season, in February and March.
Cloud builds over the high ground from late morning in any season, so volcano and mountain flights go first thing. July and August are the busiest weeks for rooms and aircraft; ask four to six weeks ahead for those dates. Sumba and Sumbawa use the same WITA time zone as Bali, but sunrise and sunset come at slightly different clock times, so we confirm the daylight window for each leg in the quote.
Dates, targets, group and purpose on WhatsApp. We read it the same day.
We test legs, fuel stops, permits and the aircraft with the operator. If the plan fails, we say so and suggest the scheduled-flight option.
The reply lists the legs, the stops, the aircraft class and a price for the whole plan, not a list of surprises.
The quote explains how to pay the deposit; this website takes no money. The pilot has the final weather call on every leg.
Across the Lombok Strait in about 35–50 min instead of a half-day by boat or ferry.
A multi-leg charter to Labuan Bajo with a fuel stop, planned over two days with aerial time over Komodo National Park.
About 454 km in a straight line to Tambolaka, which is 1.9–2.7 hours of airborne time for a light helicopter before fuel stops and the plan for each day's daylight. We plan it in legs over at least two days.
It is priced by quote. As a guide, the straight-line leg alone is near $10,450 one-way for the whole helicopter, and one-way includes the empty flight back. Fuel stops, permits, overnights and time in the air on Sumba are added. A scheduled flight plus a driver is far cheaper for sightseeing.
Only on a cleared private site near it, confirmed before you pay. Public beaches, temple grounds and protected areas are closed to our landings. Flying over the lagoon needs no landing and is part of most Sumba plans.
No. Tambora is an active volcano with an alert level, and Moyo is a sensitive area. You see both from the air on an approved route, and we land at an airport or a cleared site outside them.
It would be, if a local helicopter were available, but on Sumba and Sumbawa that is by quote and depends on the date. We check both plans for you and tell you which one works.
At least two, and three or four for Moyo, Tambora and Sumba together. Add a spare day for weather. Our inter-island charter page explains how standby and the empty flight back are priced.
Send a window of dates, your targets, the group and the purpose. We reply today with the legs, the aircraft and a price, or with the cheaper scheduled-flight plan if that fits better.
