Bali to Komodo by Helicopter: A Multi-Leg Expedition, Not a Transfer

Labuan Bajo is about 520 km from Ngurah Rai Airport. A scheduled flight covers it in roughly 1 h 10 min. A private helicopter needs a fuel stop and flies it in legs, 2.5–3.5 hours in the air plus the stop. That makes it the right tool for a private two-day expedition with aerial time over Komodo National Park, and the wrong one if you only want to reach Flores. Every Komodo flight is priced by quote after we plan the legs.

Reality check

Bali to Komodo: Helicopter, Scheduled Flight and Boat Compared

Most visitors reach Labuan Bajo on a scheduled flight and see the park by boat. Here is how a private helicopter compares, without the sales gloss.

OptionTime on the moveWhat it takesCost basis
Scheduled flightAbout 1 h 10 min in the airCheck-in, baggage limits, fixed times, then a transfer into townFare per person
Private helicopter, Bali to Labuan Bajo2.5–3.5 h in the air plus a fuel stopA daylight start, soft bags, weights, a landing site approved in advanceBy quote for the whole helicopter, multi-leg
Liveaboard or day boatA day trip or several nights at seaIt starts in Labuan Bajo, so you still have to get therePer person, or per boat
Scheduled flight plus a helicopter in Flores1 h 10 min plus local flightsThe aircraft still has to fly from Bali, so the saving is smallBy quote, positioning included

Taking the scheduled flight yourself does not make a Komodo helicopter cheap, because the aircraft has to cross the same 520 km without you. The page explains why in the sections below, and the Komodo reality-check guide covers more detail.

The legs

How a Flight of This Length Is Flown: Legs, Fuel and Water

The route runs east from Bali: across the Lombok Strait and the Wallace Line, over Lombok, along the length of Sumbawa with the Tambora volcano, 2,850 m, off to your left, and then over the last strait to Flores. A light helicopter carries fuel for a limited time in the air, and a long chain of islands is flown in legs between airports and approved pads where fuel is available. The quote names every stop, and the operator chooses them for fuel, weather and daylight.

The straight-line estimate is 2.2–3 hours airborne. Once routing, wind and weather are counted, plan on 2.5–3.5 hours in the air plus each fuel stop. All legs must finish before sunset, so a Bali to Labuan Bajo transfer is a one-day flight that starts soon after sunrise. The shorter stage from Lombok International Airport to Labuan Bajo is 1.8–2.3 hours on its own.

For scale, Bali to Lombok airport is 122 km and costs $3,250 one-way on our guide price list for the whole helicopter, with the flight back included. Komodo is far more distance than that, plus the stops, plus a crew night away if you stay, so the total comes out as a multiple of it. This is why we do not publish a fixed fare. The pilot, the crew and the aircraft are on the job for the whole trip.

Two-day plan

A Two-Day Komodo Plan That Makes the Positioning Worth It

One long day to get there, one morning in the air over the park, then home. The times are typical and set in the quote.

  • Lift-off from a Bali padThe first leg crosses the Lombok Strait to Lombok. Guests get a comfort break at every stop.
  • Fuel stop on Lombok or SumbawaThe crew refuels and checks the weather ahead. The stop adds ground time to the total, not to your flight time.
  • Land at Labuan BajoThe helicopter lands at Komodo Airport or an approved site, and you go to your hotel. The crew and aircraft stay overnight.
  • Aerial morning over the parkLabuan Bajo to Padar is 38 km, 15–20 min in the air. Circle Padar's three bays, Rinca and the reefs off Pink Beach. No landing inside the park.
  • Start the return legsBack along the islands, with the same fuel stops in reverse, landing in Bali before sunset.
Park rules

Komodo National Park Rules That Shape the Flight

  • The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been one since 1991 and covers Komodo, Rinca and Padar, with Pink Beach on Komodo. We do not land inside it: not on Padar's ridge, not at Pink Beach, not on the dragon islands.
  • Flights follow approved routes. The pilot keeps a safe height above wildlife, anchorages and boats. Noise carries over water, and we plan the circuit so it leaves wildlife alone.
  • Walking in the park happens by boat. Trekking on Komodo or Rinca uses the park's own permits and rangers, and it is arranged with a boat operator, not through us.
  • Volcano alerts along the chain. Rinjani and Tambora are active volcanoes. A raised alert can change the route or the date; see our volcano alert guide.
  • Weight is the limit, for the whole trip. Combined weight of guests and bags sets the aircraft class and the length of the legs. Soft bags only; see weight and baggage.
Landing

Where the Helicopter Can Land at the Flores End

Komodo Airport (LBJ)

The default landing: a controlled airport with ground handling arranged by the operator, close to Labuan Bajo town and the harbour.

A hotel or resort pad

Only if an approved pad exists and the management agrees. Send the hotel name and we check before you pay. See how landing at hotels and villas works.

Private land by agreement

A plot where the owner agrees and the operator has cleared the landing, with a clear flat area of roughly 25–30 m across. Public beaches, temple grounds and national parks are out.

Is it for you

When a Komodo Helicopter Makes Sense, and When It Does Not

It makes sense when you want a private expedition on your own schedule:

  • You want aerial time over Padar, Rinca and the reefs, not a ride to a hotel.
  • You are filming or photographing the park from the air; read about aerial filming and photography.
  • Four to six guests share the cost of one aircraft, and you have two days to give to it.
  • You are already planning a multi-island trip; the inter-island charter page shows how those days are built.

It does not make sense when all you need is to get to Labuan Bajo. A scheduled flight takes roughly 1 h 10 min, costs a fraction of a private multi-leg charter and runs most days. If your priority is the boat trip to the dragons, book the flight and a boat, and use a helicopter only if you want the park from above.

A shorter way to put Padar under the helicopter

Tell us if you will be on Lombok or Flores anyway, and we price the flight from there when the operator can place an aircraft. The long crossing is the expensive part of a Bali start; from Labuan Bajo the Padar circuit is 15–20 min each way. Also see the Komodo and Flores guide.

Booking

How to Ask for a Komodo Quote

Send dates, guests, weights and what you want to see

For example: 3 and 4 October, 4 guests, about 75 kg each, aerial time over Padar and Rinca, back in Bali on day 2.

We plan the legs and name the stops

The quote lists the take-off pad, each stop, the landing site at Labuan Bajo, the aircraft class and the crew's overnight stay.

A deposit holds both days

Payment instructions arrive with the quote, never through this site. We also agree a back-up day, because a weather hold on the chain delays everything.

Fly with a weather call each morning

The pilot decides at each stop. If a leg is unsafe, we hold, re-route or refund the part not flown.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly a helicopter from Bali to Komodo?

Yes, in legs. Labuan Bajo is about 520 km from Ngurah Rai Airport, which is beyond a single hop for a light helicopter, so the flight uses a fuel stop on the way. The quote names the stops.

How long does Bali to Komodo take by helicopter?

Plan on 2.5–3.5 hours in the air plus each fuel stop; the straight-line estimate is 2.2–3 hours. A scheduled flight takes roughly 1 h 10 min. All legs end before sunset, so the flight starts soon after sunrise.

How much is a helicopter from Bali to Komodo?

It is priced by quote, because the price depends on the stops, the crew's overnight stay, the aircraft class and your dates. For scale, Bali to Lombok airport is $3,250 one-way, and Komodo is much further and multi-leg. See how our prices are built.

Is it cheaper to take a scheduled flight and then a boat?

Yes, by a wide margin. A scheduled flight plus a day boat is the normal way to see Komodo. The helicopter is for guests who want a private expedition with aerial time over the park.

Can the helicopter land on Komodo, Rinca or Padar?

No. Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and we do not land inside it. Landings are at Komodo Airport or another approved site outside the park, and the circuit over the islands is aerial only.

What is the best way to see Padar from the air?

Fly from Labuan Bajo: Padar is 38 km away and 15–20 min in the air. The morning light is softest from 07:00, and the three bays of different sand colours show best before cloud and haze.
