Helicopter East Java: Ijen and Bromo
Cross the Bali Strait to the Ijen crater lake and the Bromo caldera by private helicopter. Approved routes only, no landing inside parks.

The ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang takes about an hour, and the road to Ijen still lies beyond it. A private helicopter flies from Ngurah Rai across the Bali Strait to the Ijen crater in 35–50 min, over the turquoise acid lake and its sulphur-stained rim. East Java's protected areas allow flights on approved routes but no landing inside, so each flight is priced by quote once we agree the route and a landing site outside the reserve.
The usual way is a car to Gilimanuk, the ferry to Ketapang and a road up to the crater. Times are rough estimates and depend on traffic, the ferry queue and the road.
| Option | Time on the move | What it takes | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private helicopter | 35–50 min in the air | A pad in Bali, a daylight flight and an approved landing site outside the reserve | By quote for the whole helicopter |
| Private car and the Gilimanuk–Ketapang ferry | About 3 hours by road to the port, about an hour on the ferry, then Banyuwangi and the road up | Most of a day each way, a ferry queue and a driver for the whole trip | One fare per car plus the ferry |
| Overnight tour from Bali | Two days, often with a night start for the crater trek | A fixed itinerary in a shared vehicle | Fare per person |
| Helicopter one way, car back | 35–50 min plus most of a day by road | Works only if you want the road once and a night in Banyuwangi | Still the full helicopter price, since the aircraft flies back empty |
If your aim is the trek at night to see the blue sulphur flames, take the ferry and the night trek: a helicopter flies by day only and cannot show you the flames. If your aim is the crater lake from the air, a morning flight beats a day on the road. More on the region in the East Java guide.
The helicopter lifts from a Bali pad and heads north-west over the farmland and forest of western Bali. The West Bali National Park lies below, where flights follow an approved route and keep their height. Then the land ends at the Gilimanuk coast and the Bali Strait opens. The ferries shuttling between Gilimanuk and Ketapang look small below you. Across the strait lies Java, and you are over Banyuwangi's coast in 30–45 min from lift-off.
From Ketapang the Ijen crater is only 20 km inland, 10–15 min in the air. The volcano complex rises behind the coast in green slopes and coffee-growing country, and the crater itself is the reason people come: a wide, turquoise, highly acidic lake ringed by pale rock stained yellow with sulphur. The pilot circles at a safe height set by the morning wind, then you turn for home or for the landing site near Banyuwangi.
Light matters. In the first hours after sunrise the air is calm, the lake colour is strongest and cloud has not yet capped the rim. Mountain cloud builds from late morning, especially in the wet season, so Ijen flights are booked for 07:00–10:00. East Java runs one hour behind Bali, so your watch changes when you cross.
Straight-line estimates for a light helicopter. Pricing stays by quote, because the reserve rules and the landing site shape the route.
| Leg | Air time | Distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bali airport to Banyuwangi (Ketapang) | 30–45 min | 107 km | Across the Bali Strait; a landing site near the ferry port or an approved hotel site |
| Banyuwangi (Ketapang) to the Ijen crater | 10–15 min | 20 km | The short hop that makes a stay in Banyuwangi worth it |
| Bali airport to the Ijen crater, direct | 35–50 min | 127 km | The default for a morning flight and back to Bali |
| Ijen to Mount Bromo | 40–55 min | 143 km | Bromo is 2,329 m inside a national park; no landing inside; by quote |
For scale, the Bali to Lombok airport transfer covers 122 km and starts at $3,250 one-way for the whole helicopter on our guide price list. Ijen is a similar distance, so treat that figure as a rough guide, not as the quote: the real number depends on the route approval, the landing site and whether you return to Bali. See how prices are built.
Clock times are Bali time (WITA). In East Java, an hour behind, subtract one hour.
The ferry port at Ketapang is 30–45 min from the airport. A morning landing here with a car waiting turns the flight into a one-way trip into East Java.
A dry savanna on Java's north-east coast, north of Banyuwangi and inside a national park. It is a flyover, priced as an extra leg, with no landing.
40–55 min from Ijen, 2,329 m and inside Bromo–Tengger–Semeru National Park. It is a long day with a landing outside the boundary. See inter-island charter.
For example: 14 July, 3 guests, about 80 kg each, pick-up in Sanur, back in Bali by lunchtime.
The quote names the pad, the route, the landing site, the aircraft class and the total airborne time behind the price. Approvals can take a few days.
The quote carries the payment details; you pay nothing through this site. A back-up day is held in case cloud sits on the crater.
The pilot checks the rim before lift-off. The helicopter classes page shows which aircraft takes the group.
Over the Bedugul and Munduk lakes to the north coast in 20–30 min, instead of a 3-hour drive.
Across the Lombok Strait to Rinjani's crater and Segara Anak lake and back to Bali the same day. Priced by quote.
A multi-leg charter to Labuan Bajo with a fuel stop, planned over two days with aerial time over Komodo National Park.
Across the Lombok Strait in about 35–50 min instead of a half-day by boat or ferry.
Yes. The Ijen crater is 127 km from Ngurah Rai Airport, across the Bali Strait, and takes 35–50 min in the air. We follow approved routes and land only outside the protected areas.
35–50 min in the air, against about 3 hours by road to Gilimanuk, about an hour on the Gilimanuk–Ketapang ferry and the drive up to the crater. The helicopter turns a day on the road into a morning.
It is priced by quote, because the route approval, the landing site and a return to Bali change the cost. As a rough guide, Bali to Lombok airport, a similar 122 km, is $3,250 one-way for the whole helicopter.
No. Ijen and the parks around it are protected, and we do not land inside them. We land at an airport, a hotel site or private land outside the boundary, with the owner's agreement and the operator's clearance.
No. The blue sulphur flames can be seen only in the dark, and our flights run from sunrise to sunset. By day you see the turquoise lake and the sulphur-stained rim.
If a volcano alert closes the area, we move the date or change the route. If cloud covers the rim, the pilot decides: we wait, move to another morning, or refund the part not flown. Read what to ask an operator before you book.
Tell us the date, how many guests and their rough weights, and whether you return to Bali. We reply the same day with the route, the landing site outside the reserve and a quote.
