Bali to Ijen by Helicopter
Across the Bali Strait to Banyuwangi and the Ijen crater lake in 35–50 min, with no landing inside the reserve. Priced by quote.

Helicopter East Java flights cross the Bali Strait to Banyuwangi in about 30–45 min, reach the Ijen crater lake in 35–50 min and Mount Bromo in 1.2–1.6 hours from the Ngurah Rai area. Every plan is priced by quote, because routes follow approved corridors and nothing lands inside a national park. As a guide, the Ijen leg alone works out near $3,250 one-way for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests.
The Bali Strait is the short gap between the north-west tip of Bali and the eastern tip of Java. Ferries run from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, the port of Banyuwangi, and the crossing takes about an hour. A helicopter flies the same line in minutes, and the whole trip from the Ngurah Rai area to Banyuwangi is 30–45 min; the Bali to Ijen helicopter page has the route plan. From Lovina on the north coast it is shorter: 25–30 min.
On the Bali side the flight passes the dry forests of West Bali National Park and the reefs off Menjangan Island. Both are protected, so there is no landing and the pilot keeps to approved heights. The strait itself is busy with ferries and has strong tidal currents, and the surface often shows tide lines in a different colour.
On the Java side the land opens out. Banyuwangi's coast runs north, the Ijen volcanic complex rises inland, and the dry savanna of Baluran lies further up the coast. Bromo is a long way west, across East Java, which is why the two targets are planned very differently.
Straight-line guide figures for budgeting. The quote replaces them with the real route.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banyuwangi (Ketapang) | 107 km | 30–45 min | from $2,850 |
| Ijen crater | 127 km | 35–50 min | from $3,250 |
| Mount Bromo | 260 km | 1.2–1.6 hours | from $6,300 |
One-way prices include the helicopter's flight back, so a one-way fare is close to a return. These East Java figures exclude any fuel stop, permits and time spent circling the crater, which the quote adds. Bromo is a long leg: ask whether a stop at Banyuwangi helps.
Guests staying at Lovina or Munduk start closer to the strait: 25–30 min to Banyuwangi against 30–45 min from the airport area. Details of the north-coast pad are in the helicopter Lovina guide.
| Destination | Distance | Air time | One-way helicopter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banyuwangi (Ketapang) | 68 km | 25–30 min | from $2,100 |
| Ijen crater | 87 km | 25–40 min | from $2,500 |
| Menjangan Island | 56 km | 20–30 min | from $1,900 |
Guide figures from Lovina. Menjangan Island is on the Bali side and is for flying over only.
| Place | What it is | From the helicopter | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ijen crater | A volcanic crater with a turquoise acid lake and a sulphur mine on its floor | The lake colour is clearest in daylight, with the rim and the sulphur works below. The blue flames seen by trekkers glow at night, so they cannot be seen; we do not fly at night | Approved route; no landing at the crater; a gas or ash advisory can close it |
| Baluran National Park | Dry savanna and bush on the coast of north-east Java | Open grassland running toward the sea; the grass turns gold in the dry season | Protected park; no landing; approved route only |
| Bromo–Tengger–Semeru National Park | A caldera with Bromo (2,329 m) smoking in a sea of sand, and Semeru, Java's highest volcano, behind it | The cone and the sand sea from above, clearest early in the day | No landing inside the park; the volcano's alert level decides whether we fly |
| Banyuwangi and Ketapang | The port city on the strait, with the ferry terminal | Ferries crossing, the coast road and the line of the strait | Landing at an airport or an approved site outside protected land |
A fixed price list does not work for this part of Java. Four things change every plan:
These are protected areas. We fly the approved routes and set down only at an airport or a cleared site outside them. A landing on a crater rim is not something we offer.
We also say so when a plan is a poor fit. If you only want Ijen's lake and have a free morning, the helicopter is a good use of time. If you want the blue flames, you need to trek at night.
A sketch of how one day could run, not a timetable. Morning is the choice: the crater is clear before cloud builds.
| Way | How it works | Time | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferry and drive | Road to Gilimanuk, the Ketapang ferry, then a drive to the Ijen base | A long day: several hours of road in Bali, about an hour on the ferry, then the drive in Java | Per person for the ferry and a car with a driver by the day |
| Overnight Ijen trek | Trekkers start in the small hours to reach the crater for the blue flames | An overnight in Banyuwangi plus the climb | Per person; the only way to see the flames |
| Bromo from Java | Tour operators usually run Bromo as its own trip, often from cities in East Java | A day or more, not an easy add-on from Bali | Per person for the tour and permits |
| Private helicopter | A helicopter from Bali with a return the same day | Ijen 35–50 min one-way, Bromo 1.2–1.6 hours one-way | By quote; the Ijen leg alone is near $3,250 one-way as a guide |
The helicopter and the trek are not either-or. Some guests fly over the crater by day and trek on another night. For the same logic on Lombok see helicopter Lombok.

The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest air and the best colour on the Ijen lake. In the wet season, November to March, the volcanoes are often in cloud by late morning, so slots are early and back-up days are needed (see the best time for a helicopter flight). Flights run in daylight only, and the best time is 07:00 to 10:00.
Bromo and Semeru are active, and Ijen can emit gas. An official alert level can close a route on the day, even if the sky is clear. The pilot decides, and we reschedule or refund the part not flown. July, August and the Christmas to New Year weeks are the busiest, so ask three or four weeks ahead for those dates. The guide to volcano flights and ash advisories explains how alerts affect Bali flights, and the same logic applies in Java.

No. Ijen and Bromo are inside protected areas and landings there are not offered. We fly approved routes over them, and we land at an airport or a cleared site outside the parks.
It is priced by quote. As a guide, the Ijen leg alone is near $3,250 one-way for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, and one-way includes the helicopter's flight back. Time over the crater, a fuel stop or a lunch wait changes the total.
No. The flames show in the dark and we fly only between sunrise and sunset. By day you see the turquoise lake, the rim and the sulphur works from above.
It is possible but long: 1.2–1.6 hours in the air each way, plus the time over the caldera, and probably a fuel stop. Many guests choose Ijen for a day and plan Bromo separately. We tell you which fits your date.
Dry season, April to October, and early morning, from about 07:00, before cloud builds. In the wet season the volcanoes are often covered by late morning, so we keep a back-up day.
