Bali to Komodo by Helicopter
A multi-leg charter to Labuan Bajo with a fuel stop, planned over two days with aerial time over Komodo National Park.
Komodo from Bali by helicopter is possible, but it is not a scenic flight you book for a Tuesday morning. Labuan Bajo is about 520 km from Ngurah Rai Airport in a straight line, which is 2.2–3 hours of flying in a light helicopter, so the trip needs at least one fuel stop and is priced by quote. A scheduled flight covers the same distance in about 1 h 10 min. This page sets out what a helicopter trip involves, what it costs in principle and when a boat or a plane serves you better.

Komodo National Park sits in the islands around Labuan Bajo, at the western end of Flores. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site (since 1991) with Komodo, Rinca and Padar islands and Pink Beach.
| Item | What it means for a helicopter trip |
|---|---|
| Distance | About 520 km from Ngurah Rai Airport to Komodo Airport (Labuan Bajo), measured in a straight line. |
| Flying time | 2.2–3 hours for a light helicopter, before fuel stops and any detour around weather. |
| Fuel stops | At least one, at an airport or approved site on the island chain between Bali and Flores. Stops are chosen with the operator and depend on the aircraft. |
| Daylight | Day flights only, sunrise to sunset. The whole trip must finish before dark, so it starts early. |
| Landing | At Labuan Bajo airport or another approved site. No landing inside the national park. |
| Price | By quote. It is built from the legs, the stops, crew duty and getting the helicopter back. |
The route page with the same figures is Bali to Komodo by helicopter; the destination guide is Komodo and Flores from the air.
Most tourist flights in Bali use single-engine light helicopters that cruise at about 110–135 knots, or roughly 205–250 km/h. At that speed the crossing from Bali to Flores is more than two hours of flying, and a light helicopter carries fuel for only a limited number of hours. The pilot plans fuel with a reserve, so a stop is part of the plan, not a sign that something went wrong.
Compare that with the Bali to Lombok hop, which is 35–50 min in one leg and priced as a straightforward transfer. To reach Komodo the helicopter crosses Lombok, Sumbawa and the sea beyond, with stretches of open water between the islands. The operator chooses the route, the stops and the weather limits, and the pilot has the final say on the day.
The second limit is daylight. Flights run only between sunrise and sunset, and a fuel stop, a refuel and a short rest take time. A morning start from Bali is the realistic plan, and a late change of schedule can push the second half of the trip to the next day.
We do not publish a fixed price for this route, because the legs depend on the aircraft and the stops. A quote is built from the same pieces as every other flight on this site: airborne minutes at the aircraft's rate, a landing or fuel fee at each stop, the pilot's duty time and the helicopter's flight home or onward.
For scale only: the flying alone, priced on the same per-minute basis as our shorter transfers, would be in the order of $12,000 one-way for the whole helicopter, about $3,000 each for four guests. Real quotes add stops, fees and any overnight, so treat that figure as a starting point for a conversation, not a price. Compare it honestly with a scheduled seat, and with how much of a day you save.
The one-way price already counts the helicopter's flight home, so a return adds waiting time or an overnight for the aircraft and crew when the schedule needs one, not a second full fare. How we build a price is explained on the price page.
For most people the plane is the practical way to Komodo, and the helicopter is a special case. These are the realistic options.
| Option | Time | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled flight Bali to Labuan Bajo | About 1 h 10 min in the air | Almost everyone | Airline baggage rules, and peak months fill early |
| Plane, then a day-trip boat | Flight plus a day on the water | Two or three days to see Komodo, Rinca and Padar | Early boat departure; park rules and fees apply |
| Plane, then a liveaboard | Multi-night cruise from Labuan Bajo | Snorkelling, Pink Beach and quiet anchorages | Book early for July and August |
| Helicopter, multi-leg | A day or more, by quote | Groups with luggage, film crews, tight schedules | Fuel stops, weather, daylight and cost |
| Local helicopter flight at Labuan Bajo | By quote | Guests already in Flores who want the view | Availability of an aircraft on your dates; no landing in the park |

Weather along a route this long can change the plan. Flexible dates let us choose the clearest morning.
Weight is the limit in tropical heat and a long leg carries more fuel. Approximate weights decide the class; see the helicopter classes and our weight guide.
A one-way trip, a return and an open-jaw trip are priced differently, and an overnight at a stop is possible if the schedule needs one.
Every flight is operated by a licensed Indonesian air operator. For a long water route also ask about the aircraft's equipment and the route plan; the safety questions guide lists them.
The reply names the aircraft class, the fuel stops, the landing site at Labuan Bajo and the price. A deposit holds the slot. Nothing is paid on this website.
Yes, in principle, as a multi-leg trip with at least one fuel stop. The straight-line distance is about 520 km, and the flying time is 2.2–3 hours in a light helicopter. The route, the stops and the price are set by quote.
2.2–3 hours of flying plus time at each stop, so plan on a full day from first light. A scheduled flight takes about 1 h 10 min in the air.
By quote. The price depends on the aircraft, the stops, crew duty and whether you fly one-way or return. For scale, the flying alone on our usual per-minute basis is about $12,000 one-way for the whole helicopter, before stops and fees.
No. Komodo National Park is a protected area and we do not land inside it. Flights near the park follow approved routes, which we confirm in the quote.
Take a scheduled flight to Labuan Bajo and book a day-trip boat or a liveaboard from there. If you also want a view from above, ask us whether a local helicopter flight is available on your dates.
The operator and the pilot set the route, the fuel reserve and the weather limits, and the pilot can refuse to fly. Ask for the operator name, licence number and the aircraft's equipment before you pay. The safety guide has the questions.
Send dates, guests, rough weights and bags, and whether you fly one-way or return. We reply with the legs, the fuel stops, the aircraft and a fixed price, or tell you plainly if another way suits you better.
