Family Day in Bali With a 12-Minute Helicopter Flight

A family day built around one short flight: 12 minutes over the Bukit cliffs and the GWK statue from $450, or 18 minutes along the Uluwatu coast from $650, for the whole helicopter. The flight is at 08:30, the beach comes next, then lunch, a nap window and a quiet pool afternoon. Below are the clock times, the weight and seating notes, and one rule: confirm the child limits with the operator before you book.

The day

Family Day Plan: Flight at 08:30, Nap at 13:00

The plan suits families staying on the Bukit, in Jimbaran or in Nusa Dua. Sunrise is between about 05:50 and 06:35, so 08:30 is well inside the clear-air window of 07:00 to 10:00. If you stay further north, the quote names a closer pad.

  • Breakfast at the hotelSomething light and familiar. Fill water bottles, pack a snack and a spare T-shirt, and keep sunscreen on the children before you leave.
  • Car to the padA private car is from $50, priced by area. Tell the children the plan in the car: a loud, short ride, headsets on, seat belt on.
  • Briefing and weigh-inThe crew weighs the bags, and the pilot shows the headsets and seat belts and explains where hands go. This is the moment to say if a child is nervous or gets car-sick.
  • Flight: 12 or 18 minutesThe 12-minute flight (Bukit tour) passes the GWK statue, the Pandawa cliffs and the Bukit coast. The 18-minute one (Uluwatu tour) carries on to Uluwatu Temple on its sea cliff. Both stay near the coast, and the morning air is usually smoother than the afternoon's.
  • Landing and photosAsk the pilot if the children may see the helicopter from a safe distance after shutdown. A ground photographer is $250 if you want family pictures at the pad, and a child's birthday can be added as a birthday flight.
  • Beach timeNusa Dua (helicopter from Nusa Dua) has a reef-sheltered lagoon with gentle water for small swimmers, and Pandawa beach lies under the white cliffs you just saw from above. Both are a short drive from the pad.
  • LunchAn easy meal near the beach or back at the hotel. The hot hours start now, so keep the children in shade.
  • Nap windowThe window is protected on purpose. Small children sleep, parents rest, and a flight delayed by weather has room to shift without breaking the day.
  • Pool and ice creamA quiet afternoon at the hotel. This is when the photos and videos come out of the phone, and the hours when a weather-delayed flight can still go.
  • Optional sunset dinner on the groundJimbaran Bay seafood cafés line the beach and face west. The helicopter is not needed here; we do not fly after sunset, which falls between about 18:05 and 18:40.

Weights and seats

Weights, Seating and Child Limits

Weight, not seats, sets the class. In Bali heat the aircraft has less spare lift, so we ask for the approximate weight of every adult and child, plus the bags. Send ages too. A family of four with light bags fits the 4-seat class; five or six guests, or one heavy bag, can push you to the larger class.

The operator sets the seating. Seats are assigned to balance the helicopter, so we cannot promise a window seat for a child. Ask for a parent beside every child, and for the youngest next to an adult who can reach the buckle.

Confirm child limits with the operator. Minimum age, whether a small child may share a seat, what restraint is used and whether child-size headsets are on board are set by the operator and vary by aircraft. We put the question to the operator and write the answer in the quote, so ask for it in the first message and decide only after you have read it.

Noise and nerves. The cabin is loud without headsets, and with them it is a muffled hum. Let the children try on ear defenders at home if you have a pair, and tell them the flight is short. A twelve-minute loop is plenty for a first flight; the kids and seniors guide has more on pacing the day.

Why this order

Why the Flight Is Early and the Nap Is Protected

A short flight in the morning uses the best part of the day. Between 07:00 and 10:00 the air is clear and usually calm, the sun is not yet hot, and children are fresh. Cloud builds over the hills from late morning and showers cluster in the afternoon from November to March, so an early slot also gives you a second chance on the same day if the pilot waits for a cloud to move.

The nap sits in the middle on purpose. It is the hottest stretch of the day and the point where tired children get cross. It also acts as the weather buffer: if wind or cloud pushes the flight back, you can slide it to the afternoon and still finish before sunset. The latest take-off we plan for a family is 16:30, which keeps a wide margin before the earliest sunset of about 18:05 in June.

If a child is unwell or unhappy on the day, say so at the pad. Nobody should feel pushed to fly, and the change rules are written in your quote. Our guide to weight limits and baggage explains what happens to the price if the class changes.

Pack and book

Family Checklist Before You Fly

  • Send ages and weights. Every child and adult, plus the number and type of bags. Soft bags only.
  • Ask for the operator's child rules in writing. Minimum age, seat sharing, restraints, headsets. Decide after you have the answer.
  • Dress for rotor wash. Closed shoes, no hats, no loose scarves. Tie back long hair.
  • Leave toys and balloons at the hotel. Loose items can leave the cabin at boarding. A small soft toy held in the lap is fine.
  • Bring water and a snack for the pad. The briefing and the wait can run 15 to 20 minutes either side of the flight.
  • Prepare the children. Describe the noise, practise wearing ear protection, and agree that nobody touches doors or handles.
  • Keep a calm afternoon free. A later slot is the weather back-up, and the nap needs the hours anyway.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can children fly on a helicopter in Bali?

In many cases yes, but the minimum age, seating and headset rules are set by the operator and the aircraft. Send each child's age and weight in your first message. We pass the question on and write the operator's answer in the quote, before you pay.

How long should a first flight be for a family?

Twelve minutes is enough for most families and costs $450 for the whole helicopter. The 18-minute flight at $650 adds Uluwatu Temple. A 30-minute flight is better kept for older children who have flown before.

How much does a family of four pay?

The 12-minute flight is $450 for the whole helicopter, about $115 each for four. The 18-minute flight is $650, about $165 each. The price does not change with the children's ages, but their weights count toward the class.

What time of day is best for kids?

Around 08:30. The air is clear and usually smooth, the sun is not hot, and children are rested. It leaves the middle of the day for the beach, lunch and a nap, with the afternoon free as the weather back-up.

What if my child is scared on the day?

Tell the pilot at the briefing. If a child does not want to fly, the plan can change at the pad; the change and refund rules are in your quote. A short flight and a parent in the next seat help most children.

Can grandparents or older relatives come?

Yes, up to the class limit, if they can step up into the cabin and sit for 12 to 18 minutes. Mobility notes and boarding help are in the kids and seniors guide; tell us in advance.
