Aerial Photography and Filming
Hourly helicopter charter for photo, video and film crews, with a camera operator seat, planned light and a shot list agreed with the pilot.
Hire a helicopter for aerial photos in Bali when you need several locations in one hour, wide coastline or volcano shots, or flying in wind that grounds a small drone. Hire a drone operator when you need a low, slow hover over one villa, beach or venue. A helicopter charter is $2,300 per flight hour for up to 4 crew, and a short window-shot flight starts at $450; drone operator rates vary by operator. Drone use in Indonesia is regulated, with permits and no-fly zones near airports and sacred sites, so check current rules and permits before you plan. Below: a comparison table, rules, noise, crew, image quality, costs and a combined approach.

Neither is better in general. They solve different shots.
| Factor | Helicopter | Drone |
|---|---|---|
| Locations in one session | Several. At a cruise of about 205–250 km/h you can reach the Bukit, Ubud and the coast in one hour | One site, or a few close ones; between sites you travel by road |
| Where the camera can sit | Along a coast or valley at speed, wide and high, with room for repeat passes | Low, slow and close, with a stable hover over a villa, pool or beach |
| Image quality | Shots go through closed windows, so reflections matter; the camera is a real cinema or mirrorless body on a human operator | No glass in the way; the sensor and lens are small and the clip is steadied by the gimbal |
| Wind and air | Often flies in conditions that ground a small drone; the pilot decides | Limited in a strong breeze or over rough ground |
| Noise on the ground | Loud at take-off, landing and low passes | Quieter, but a buzz that carries over a quiet site |
| Crew | Pilot plus up to 4 crew in the 4-seat class, up to 6 in the larger class | A pilot and usually a spotter, on the ground at the site |
| Rules | Flown under the air operator's licence, with air traffic control and daylight-only rules | Regulated, with permits and no-fly zones near airports and sacred sites; check current rules and permits |
| Cost | $2,300 per flight hour for the aircraft, or $450 for 12 minutes | Drone operator rates vary; ground drone filming as an add-on at $300 |
| Best for | Coastlines, volcanoes, resort reveals, travel films, rural valleys | Villas, hotels, beaches, close hovers, small venues |
The cost row compares different things on purpose: a helicopter is billed by flight hour for the whole aircraft, a drone by the job or the day. The helicopter figures are guide prices from the price page.
Indonesia restricts drone use. Permits, no-fly zones near airports and limits near sacred sites all apply, and altitude and distance limits exist. We do not quote regulations because they change, so check current rules and permits with the authorities or a licensed local operator before any drone flight. Commercial work can need more than a hobby flight does.
Two places deserve special care on Bali. The first is the airport. Ngurah Rai sits between Kuta and Jimbaran, so the south coast near those areas is close to flight paths, and a site that looks open may sit inside a restricted zone. The second is the temples. Even where a drone flight is lawful, flying over a temple or a ceremony is a cultural problem. Ask the temple management first, and move on if the answer is no.
A helicopter is flown under the operator's licence, and the pilot and air traffic control decide the route and the height. We cannot promise low passes over temples, ceremonies, villages or the airport zone, and the pilot may refuse a pass on the day. For the filming side of that, read the aerial filming service page.
A helicopter is loud on the ground. If your shoot needs clean location sound, such as dialogue or birdsong, plan the helicopter for the visuals and record the sound separately. A shoot at a villa or a hotel needs notice to neighbours and to the property manager, because take-off and landing are the loudest minutes. Balinese ceremonies and processions can close a road or a site at short notice, so ask about your date.
A drone is quieter but not silent, and it hangs in one place for as long as the battery lasts, which can be as intrusive on a quiet beach as a quick helicopter pass. Both disturb a wedding ceremony, and both need the host's agreement.
Crew works differently. In a helicopter the seats are the limit: up to 4 crew in the 4-seat class, and up to 6 in the larger class, with the pilot extra. Every kit bag counts against weight, which in Bali heat is the real limit; read weight limits and baggage before you pack a cinema rig. With a drone, the crew stand on the ground at the site.
Helicopter windows stay shut in flight, so every frame goes through glass or acrylic. Reflections are the main enemy. Wear dark clothes, cover the cabin side of the lens and shoot close to the window; a polarising filter can show stress patterns on plastic, so skip it. A door-off flight is possible only if the operator and the aircraft approvals allow it, and we never promise it in advance. The photo tips for helicopter flights go through settings and seats.
A drone has no glass and can hold a hover, but its camera has a small sensor and its flight time on one battery is short, so crews carry several. Wind and heat both shorten what it can do. The drone gets a close, low, steady clip; the helicopter gets the wide and the high, with a larger camera and a real lens.
Shoot the wide shot from the aircraft and the close shot from the ground. That mix is also why the combined approach below works.
Helicopter prices are guide prices for the whole aircraft, with pilot and fuel included. Drone operators set their own rates.
| Option | Length | Guide price | Each, with every seat full |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short window-shot flight | 12 min | $450 | $115 |
| Extended window-shot flight | 30 min | $1,150 | $290 |
| Golden-hour shoot, ends at sunset | 30 min | $1,250 | $315 |
| Hourly charter, 4-seat class | 1 hour | $2,300 | $575 |
| Hourly charter, 6-seat class | 1 hour | $3,300 | $550 |
| Helicopter waiting on the ground | per hour | $300 | – |
| Drone filming from the ground | add-on | $300 | – |
| Photographer on the ground | add-on | $250 | – |
| Independent drone operator | per job or day | Rates vary by operator | – |
The drone add-on films the helicopter's arrival and landing from the ground. It is never launched from the aircraft.
| Job | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Villa or hotel listing photos | Drone | Low hover over one site, no travel between locations |
| A resort reveal over the coast | Helicopter | Wide, high, moving shot along cliffs or sea |
| Volcano and lake footage | Helicopter, morning | Cone, rim and lake in one pass; see the Batur tour |
| Wedding arrival or a proposal landing | Both | Helicopter flies the arrival, a ground drone and photographer film it; see the wedding page |
| A film or travel piece across the island | Helicopter charter | Three or four locations in one hour |
| Surf break and reef detail | Drone, then helicopter for the wide | Low angle on the wave, high angle on the coast |
| One day from sunrise to sunset | Both, planned | See the photographer day itinerary |
Most Bali shoots do best with both tools, each doing what it is good at.
Wide and moving goes to the helicopter. Close, low and still goes to the drone or the ground camera.
07:00–10:00 for hills and volcanoes, and the last hour before sunset for the coast. Fly the priority shot first, while the light and the aircraft are best.
A drone on the ground records the landing and walk-off, within current rules and permits. It never launches from the helicopter.
$250 covers boarding, lift-off and landing, and the behind-the-scenes set.
Sacred sites, airports and private land each have owners and rules. Settle them in writing first.

Hourly charter is $2,300 for up to 4 crew and $3,300 for up to 6. A short window-shot flight is $450 for 12 minutes and an extended one $1,150 for 30. All prices are for the whole helicopter.
Only if the operator and the aircraft approvals allow it, and we never promise it in advance. Plan the shoot for closed windows and treat an open door as a bonus if it is approved.
No. Drone filming is from the ground only, for example the arrival and the landing, at $300 as an add-on and subject to current rules and permits.
They give different quality. The helicopter carries a full-size camera and lens but shoots through glass; the drone has no glass but a small sensor. For wide moving shots over several locations the helicopter wins. For a close, low, steady clip the drone does.
We cannot promise it. The pilot and air traffic control decide the height and the route, and sacred sites and ceremonies come first. Ask for the shot list in the quote and expect the pilot to refuse any pass that is not safe or respectful.
Tell us the locations, the date, the crew size and the kit weights. We reply the same day with the aircraft, the time window and a fixed price. Drone filming is subject to current rules and permits.
