Photographer Day in Bali: Three Flights From Sunrise to Sunset

Three flights chosen for the light: 07:15 over Mount Batur and the Tegalalang terraces, 11:00 over the turquoise water off Nusa Penida, and a golden-hour flight along the Bukit cliffs that ends at sunset. Each is 30 minutes, from $1,150 for the whole helicopter, and the sunset flight is $1,250. Windows stay shut in flight, so this plan adds the shot list, pad logistics, gear notes and a permits hedge.

The day

Photographer Day Plan: Three Flights, Three Kinds of Light

Sunrise is about 06:35 in June and 05:50 in December, and sunset is between about 18:05 and 18:40. Flights can start at sunrise, but the clear air in the hills begins around 07:00, so the first flight waits for it. The last flight ends at sunset and there is no flying after dark.

  • Gear check at the hotelCharged batteries, empty cards, wiped lenses, a dark top to cut reflections. Everything into one soft bag with straps.
  • Central pad and briefingThe Batur flight starts from a pad on the central side of the island, named in the quote. The crew weighs you with the kit; the pilot assigns seats for balance. Say which frames matter most, in priority order.
  • Flight one: terraces, rim, cone and lakeAbout 30 minutes. The Tegalalang terraces slide under you around minute 6 to 9, the rim at about minute 10 to 12, and the cone and Lake Batur from about minute 12 to 22. Low light is at its best here.
  • Landing and card swapCheck your histogram, back up the cards and drink water before the drive.
  • Drive to the Bukit padUbud to Uluwatu is about 1.5 to 2 hours by car. A helicopter hop is 14–20 min for $1,300 one-way, if both ends have approved sites.
  • Bukit pad, second briefingReset the camera for bright light and shorter shutter speeds. The pilot confirms the line for the Penida loop and the sides you will see.
  • Flight two: Penida and the turquoise waterA 30-minute loop from the Bukit across the channel to Crystal Bay, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and Kelingking. About 20 minutes go on the crossing and about 10 along the cliffs, so be ready on arrival.
  • Lunch and a data backupOffload the morning files to a drive. In the hills cloud builds from late morning, so the interior would now be a poor subject; the coast is fine.
  • Quiet hoursEdit, rest, scout the cliffs from the ground. Midday light is hard on land, and the hours are free so the day has weather slack.
  • Pad, third briefingArrive 45 minutes before take-off. Reset exposure for low sun, clean the front of the lens, fit a fresh battery.
  • Flight three: golden hour on the cliffsA 30-minute flight that lifts off about 30 minutes before sunset and lands as the sun reaches the horizon. GWK, the Pandawa cliffs, Padang Padang, Bingin and Uluwatu Temple on its 70 m cliff in warm light.
  • Wheels downThe helicopter does not fly after sunset. Dusk frames of the pad, the crew and the aircraft are taken on the ground.
Shot list

Shot List: What to Shoot in Each Window

Each window is matched to a landscape, because the same place looks different at different hours.

WindowFlightFrames to planWhy then
07:00–10:00Mount Batur and TegalalangTerrace steps from the side, the caldera rim, the cone from three sides, Lake Batur, Mount Agung on the horizonLow side light draws the terrace steps; the air is clear before cloud builds over the volcano
10:30–12:00Nusa Penida loopCrystal Bay shallows, the Broken Beach arch, Angel's Billabong, the Kelingking headland, reef edgesA high sun lights the shallows to turquoise, and the sea is still fairly flat before the afternoon wind
Last hour before sunsetBukit cliffsGWK, the Pandawa cliffs, surfers at Suluban and Padang Padang, Bingin, the temple wallLow sun turns white limestone orange and puts glitter on the sea

Seat tip: sit on the side away from the sun for crisp detail, and on the sun side for silhouettes and glitter. The pilot assigns seats for weight and balance, so ask but do not count on a choice. The Batur tour and Penida tour pages list every landmark with its minute mark.

Gear and windows

Gear, Windows and Pad Logistics

You shoot through glass. Doors and windows stay shut in flight, so every frame passes through a layer of scratched, slightly tinted glass. Do not wipe it; the crew cleans it before take-off. Wear a dark, matt top, hold a soft lens hood close to the pane without pressing on the frame, and skip the flash and the polarising filter, which can show stress patterns on plastic. Open-door flying is possible only when the operator, the aircraft's approvals and the pilot all agree, and we never promise it up front.

Shutter and lens. The airframe vibrates. Use 1/1000 s where the light allows and never slower than 1/500 s. A 24–70 mm zoom covers most frames; a short telephoto helps for the temple wall. Leave the long lens at home, because vibration is magnified. Shoot bursts, use continuous autofocus and compose before each landmark: a 30-minute flight passes its sights quickly. The photo tips guide has phone and camera settings.

Weight and seats. Every person in the cabin takes a seat, camera operators included, and the kit weighs against the load. Send weights with the bags. No tripods, selfie sticks or clip-on gear unless the pilot agrees beforehand. Use neck or wrist straps; the rotor wash on the pad takes hats and loose lens caps.

Pad logistics. The Batur flight starts from a pad on the central side, because the flight from the Bukit to the volcano alone takes 20–30 min. The Penida and sunset flights use the Bukit pad. Between the pads you need a car or a hop; the quote names both pads and the drive from your hotel. Arrive 45 minutes before each take-off for the weigh-in and the briefing.

Permits. Filming and drone work in Indonesia can need permission beyond the flight, especially for commercial use or foreign crews. We are not a permit agency, so we cannot issue permits. Tell us how the images will be used and ask the operator what applies; check current rules and permits before you fly a ground drone. See helicopter vs drone for aerial photos for the comparison.

Pack and book

Before You Book the Photo Day

  • Pick a main day and a back-up. A volcano flight depends on cloud and volcano advisories. The pilot decides on the morning; we move the flight or refund the part not flown.
  • List frames in priority order. Weather or fuel can cut a flight short, so the best shot goes first.
  • Send kit weights. Bodies, lenses and tripods all count toward the payload, and a second camera operator takes a seat.
  • Say how the images will be used. Personal, social or commercial. It changes the permit question.
  • Charge and clear everything the evening before. The flights are short and the light does not wait for a battery swap.
  • Bring dark clothes and a strap. A dark top cuts reflections in the glass; a strap keeps the camera in your hand.
  • Allow the sunset margin. The last flight ends at sunset. A late start moves it to the next day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many helicopter flights make a good photo day in Bali?

Three: a morning flight for volcanoes and terraces, a midday flight for the turquoise water around Nusa Penida, and a golden-hour flight for the Bukit cliffs. Each is 30 minutes. They are quoted together at $1,150, $1,150 and $1,250 for the whole helicopter.

Can I open the window or shoot with the door off?

Not on a standard flight. Doors and windows stay shut, so you shoot through the glass. Door-off flying needs the operator, the aircraft's approvals and the pilot to agree, and we never promise it before asking. Raise it in your first message.

Why is the Penida flight at 11:00 and not earlier?

A high sun lights the shallow water to turquoise, and the sea is still fairly flat before the afternoon wind. Earlier gives glassier water but flatter colour, so we offer 10:30 to 12:00 as the window. The pilot confirms what the wind allows.

Do I need a permit to photograph from a helicopter?

Rules differ between a holiday photo and a commercial shoot. Commercial and film work, drones and foreign crews can need permission beyond the flight itself. We are not a permit agency; ask the operator and a local production company, and check current rules and permits first.

Can I bring a camera assistant and a tripod?

A camera assistant takes a passenger seat, up to the class limit, and their weight counts. Tripods and selfie sticks are not suitable in a small cabin unless the pilot agrees beforehand. Straps on every body and lens are expected.

What if Batur is in cloud on the day?

We wait an hour if the forecast allows, switch you to the Ubud terraces flight from $500, or move the volcano flight to your back-up date. The pilot decides, and any part not flown is refunded. Read the volcano advisory guide.
