Bali Airport to Ubud by Helicopter
Skip the Ubud traffic. Ngurah Rai to a pad near Ubud in 13–20 min, with the road time and the landing options laid out honestly.
The fastest way from Ngurah Rai Airport to Ubud is a private helicopter: 13–20 min in the air for 29 km, against about 60–90 minutes by car. The whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, is $1,300 one-way, which is $325 each for four. A car, a Grab or Gojek ride or a shuttle costs far less and has no daylight limit. This guide compares them all by time, luggage and cost, and says when the helicopter is worth it.

Car times are daytime ranges and move with traffic. Helicopter times are airborne minutes only, so add 15–20 minutes at the pad. Costs are described by basis, because only the helicopter has a fixed guide price.
| Option | Time on the move | Luggage | Cost basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private helicopter | 13–20 min airborne, plus 15–20 min at the pad | Soft bags only, within a weight limit | $1,300 one-way for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests | A group of three or four, a fixed arrival time, a daylight landing |
| Pre-booked private car | About 60–90 min | Full-size suitcases | One fare per car, a fraction of the helicopter | Most arrivals, any hour, families with big bags |
| Grab or Gojek | Similar road time to a private car, plus the wait for a driver | Depends on the car size | Priced in the app | Travellers who already use the apps; pick-up points at the airport follow airport rules and can change |
| Airport taxi | Similar road time | Boot of a standard taxi | Ask the fare before you start | Arrivals with nothing booked |
| Shared shuttle | Longer, with several drop-offs | Limited per guest | Lowest cost per person | Solo travellers and tight budgets |
The helicopter is the fastest option but not the cheapest. Prices for the flight are on the airport to Ubud route page and in the airport helicopter transfer overview.
The usual daytime range is 60–90 minutes. This is a typical pattern, not a promise, and traffic or a ceremony can push any trip beyond the range.
| When you land | What to expect on the road to Ubud |
|---|---|
| Early morning, before 07:00 | Toward the low end of the range, with light traffic on most days |
| Morning, 07:00–10:00 | Commuter and school traffic builds around Denpasar and on the road toward Gianyar, so the middle of the range is common |
| Midday to mid-afternoon | The usual 60–90 minutes, with the last stretch into Ubud the slowest part |
| Late afternoon, 16:00–19:00 | The upper end of the range, or longer on a wet day |
| After dark | Lighter traffic, but narrow roads in Ubud itself; the helicopter cannot fly after sunset |
Allow time before you reach the car as well. Immigration and baggage vary a lot between a quiet and a busy arrival wave, so do not count your landing time as your car time.
'Fastest' needs a clear definition. The flight itself is short, but the helicopter trip has stages, and the whole chain is what you compare with the road.
Counted this way, the helicopter saves roughly half an hour to an hour against the road on an ordinary day, and more at rush hour. It does not save the time you spend in immigration, and it cannot start before you are out of the terminal. That is why a flight number and landing time matter more than a pick-up time.
One-way, whole helicopter, guide prices. The price is the same for one guest or four, and it already includes the helicopter's empty flight back to base.
| Guests | Whole helicopter, one-way | Each | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,300 | $1,300 | A solo traveller pays the full figure |
| 2 | $1,300 | $650 | A couple with no deadline is usually better in a car |
| 3 | $1,300 | $435 | The helicopter starts to look reasonable |
| 4 | $1,300 | $325 | The full 4-seat class; fewest soft bags in the hold |
| 5 or 6 | 6-seat class at about 1.4 times the 4-seat price | by quote | Weight, not seats, is the limit |
In rupiah the one-way fare is about Rp 23,200,000. A same-day return with one hour of waiting is about $1,600, and each extra hour on the ground is $300. The price guide explains how every figure is built.
It makes sense when time has a price or a deadline:
It does not make sense in four common cases: a couple with no deadline, who save a lot by car; a night arrival; a group with large hard suitcases; and a villa that cannot take a landing and has no good pad nearby.
Helicopters fly from sunrise to sunset. Sunset in Bali is about 18:05 in June and 18:40 in late December. Count back from there: the flight, 15–20 minutes at the pad, the transfer from arrivals, and immigration and baggage. A plane that lands at midday usually works; a plane that lands at dusk does not, and then the car is the answer for that night.
A car swallows suitcases. A helicopter does not. The hold is small, soft bags go in and large hard cases usually do not, and weight is the limit in Bali heat, so we ask for approximate weights of every guest and bag. Four adults with four big suitcases rarely fit a 4-seat helicopter. Our guide to weight limits and baggage lists examples.
There is a hybrid that works well: fly the people and drive the bags. A car collects the luggage at the airport and takes it to the villa while you fly, or the 6-seat class takes more bags for about 1.4 times the price. A private car to the pad is $50 or more, depending on the area and the vehicle.
Ubud sits on ridges and river gorges, with tall trees and overhead cables close to most plots. A helicopter needs a clear, flat area of roughly 25–30 m across, with no loose items, and the owner's agreement and the operator's clearance. Some estates and hotel grounds qualify. Many villas do not.
That is why the realistic plan is often a pad on the edge of Ubud and a car for the last stretch. We confirm the exact landing site before you pay. If you want to land at the villa itself, send a pin and photos and read can a helicopter land at my villa. For the area, the pad and car times, see helicopter from Ubud.

We follow your flight on the day and move the pick-up if the plane is late. If the helicopter cannot fly, we refund the part not flown and the car takes over.
A private helicopter: 13–20 min in the air for 29 km, plus 15–20 minutes at the pad. The road takes about 60–90 minutes by car. The helicopter flies in daylight only and costs from $1,300 one-way for the whole aircraft.
About 60–90 minutes in the daytime, depending on traffic. Morning and late-afternoon rush hours push the trip toward or past the upper end, and the last stretch into Ubud is the slowest part.
From $1,300 one-way for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, which is $325 each for four and $650 each for two. The price includes the helicopter's flight back.
Ride-hailing pick-up points and rules at the airport are set by the airport and can change. Check the app and the airport signs when you land. A pre-booked private car with your name at arrivals avoids the question.
Only if the site is flat, roughly 25–30 m across, clear of loose items, overhead lines and tall trees, with the owner's agreement and the operator's clearance. If not, we land at an approved pad nearby and add a car. We confirm the site before you pay.
No. Tourist helicopter flights run from sunrise to sunset only, and sunset is about 18:05 in June and 18:40 in late December. For a late arrival use a car that night and keep the helicopter for a daylight flight, such as the Ubud scenic flight, from $500.
