Mount Batur Helicopter Tour
30 minutes over the Batur caldera, its crater lake and the Kintamani rim, with the Tegalalang terraces on the way. Mornings, in clear air.
Choose the Mount Batur sunrise trek if you want to stand on the summit at dawn and can climb in the dark. Choose the helicopter if you want the whole caldera, the lake and the cone in one 30-minute flight with no climb. The trek takes about two hours up in the dark, shares the trail with other trekkers and can end in cloud. The flight takes 30 minutes, usually between 07:00 and 09:00, and costs $1,150 for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests. Below: times, effort, cost, weather risk and how to do both.

Both depend on cloud and on the volcano's alert level. Everything else differs.
| Sunrise trek | Helicopter flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the mountain | Roughly two hours up in the dark, time at the summit, then the walk down | 30 minutes airborne, plus 15–20 minutes at the pad for the briefing |
| Start | In the small hours, so the climb ends before sunrise; the operator sets the pick-up | Take-off about 07:00 to 08:30; flights can start at sunrise |
| Getting there | From south Bali the drive to the Batur area is about 90–120 minutes each way, as for Kintamani | A pad nearer the highlands where an approved one is available; the quote names it |
| Effort | A steady climb on loose volcanic ground; head torch, grip shoes and a warm layer | None. You sit and wear a headset |
| What you see | Sunrise from the summit, the lake, Mount Agung on a clear dawn | The cone from three sides, the crescent lake, the Kintamani rim, Tegalalang on the way, Agung on the horizon |
| Company | Other trekkers on the trail and at the summit | Your own cabin, up to 4 guests in the standard class |
| Cloud risk | Dawn cloud can hide the sunrise and the view | Needs clear air; we offer a back-up date or a refund of the part not flown |
| Cost | Priced per person by the operator; varies by operator and by what is included | $1,150 for the whole helicopter: $575 each for two, $290 each for four |
The flight price is a guide price from the price page; the fixed quote for your date arrives on WhatsApp. For the trek, ask the trek operator what the price includes.
The trek is built around one moment. You start in the dark so that you reach the rim before the sun, and the sunrise at the top is the product. Sunrise in Bali is about 05:50 in December and about 06:35 in June and July, so the start time moves with the season. Count on roughly two hours up, a head torch, closed shoes with grip and a warm layer, since the summit is cooler than the coast and the wind finds you while you wait.
Three things decide whether the morning is good. The first is cloud: a clear dawn rewards the climb, a grey one means you climb to a white wall. The second is the crowd. The trail and the summit are shared with other groups, and the best viewpoints fill before the sun clears the horizon. The third is the volcano itself. Batur is monitored, and the authorities can restrict access when activity rises, so check the current situation before you book.
Trek operators price per person, and the price varies with what is included, such as transport, a guide and breakfast. Ask for the list. Guides are usually part of the arrangement on the main routes, so confirm that with the operator. This page does not quote trek prices because they change from one operator to the next.
The helicopter does not give you the summit at dawn. It gives you the shape of the whole volcano, which no trail can. The 30-minute flight climbs from the plain, passes the Tegalalang terraces, crosses the Kintamani rim and circles the 1,717 m cone and the crescent of Lake Batur at the permitted height and distance. On a clear morning Mount Agung, 3,031 m, stands on the horizon. The full route is on the Mount Batur helicopter tour page.
Flights can start at sunrise, but the clearest air begins near 07:00, when the cone is sharp and the lake is not yet in cloud. That is the slot we offer first. If you want to be on the summit when the sun comes up, the trek wins that point and the helicopter cannot match it. If you want to see the crater, the lava fields and the lake from above, the helicopter wins.
Before every volcano flight we look at the alert level and any ash notice on the morning itself. If cloud covers the cone, we wait an hour, switch you to the 12-minute Ubud terraces flight or move the Batur flight to your back-up date. The volcano advisory guide explains what the alert levels mean.
Times for the trek are typical and set by the operator. Flight times are examples from the 07:30 slot.
| Stage | Sunrise trek | Helicopter flight |
|---|---|---|
| Wake-up | In the small hours, many hours before the sun is up | Around 06:00 or later |
| Transport | About 90–120 minutes from south Bali, in the dark | A car to the pad named in the quote; the quote gives the drive |
| The main effort | About two hours up | 30 minutes in the air |
| The peak moment | Sunrise on the rim, about 05:50 to 06:35 depending on the month | The cone and the lake in clear morning light, from three sides |
| Back at the hotel | Mid-morning, after the walk down and the drive | Often before 10:00, with the day free |
| The rest of the day | A nap is likely | No recovery needed |
| If you | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want the summit at dawn and can climb | Trek | Only the climb puts you on the rim for sunrise |
| Have knee, back or heart problems | Flight | No climb on loose ground; ask your doctor if unsure |
| Travel with older parents or young children | Flight, or the Kintamani rim by car | Confirm child seating and age limits with the operator; the trek is a long night |
| Have one free morning and a tight itinerary | Flight | Back by 10:00 with the day free |
| Want the lowest price per person | Trek | Priced per person, usually lower than a share of a helicopter |
| Want to photograph the volcano and the lake from above | Flight | Wide views from the air; read the photo tips |
| Dislike heights or motion | Trek or a car to the rim | A light helicopter can bump; the what to wear guide covers nervous flyers |
| Are four friends or a family of four | Flight, shared | $290 each splits the whole 30 minutes four ways |
A third option is a drive to the Kintamani rim for a view from a restaurant terrace. It takes about 90–120 minutes from the airport; see helicopter Kintamani.
Do not stack them on one morning. A trek ends mid-morning, and cloud builds on the volcanoes from late morning, so a flight after the descent is the weakest slot of the day. A 02:00 wake-up also leaves you tired for a headset and a 30-minute flight.
Use two mornings. If you are fit and want the summit, trek first, because the trek is the one you cannot easily repeat. Then keep the next morning for the flight, with a back-up date after it, so one cloudy dawn does not cost you the view. If you are unsure you can climb, fly first: the flight shows you the trail, the cone and the rim, and you decide on the climb afterwards.
Both can be stopped by cloud or a volcano alert. Build one spare day into the plan, and do not set your flight home for the day after. The cost of the two together is the trek price from the trek operator plus $1,150 for the helicopter, which is $575 each for two guests.
April to October is the dry season and the clearest, while November to March brings afternoon showers and heavier cloud on the mountains; mornings are still the safer slot. The flight is flexible in a way the trek is not. We offer two dates, check the forecast the evening before and again at dawn, and reschedule or refund the part not flown. A trek leaves in the dark on a fixed day, so you may only learn about cloud when you are already on the trail.
Volcano alerts apply to both. Indonesia's volcano agency sets the alert level, and aviation notices cover ash. A higher level can close trails and routes. Read how alerts change flights and, for the best months for each flight, the best-time guide. If you want Batur plus the rest of the island, the 60-minute grand circle flies Batur, Jatiluwih and Tanah Lot at $2,300.
It is worth it if you are fit, enjoy a night start and want to be on the summit at dawn. The risks are cloud, a crowded summit and a long, tiring night. If you mostly want to see the volcano and the lake, the 30-minute flight shows more of the caldera for $1,150 for the whole helicopter.
About two hours up in the dark, then time at the summit and the walk down. From south Bali the drive to the Batur area is about 90–120 minutes each way, so it is a half-day commitment that starts in the small hours.
No. The trek is priced per person by the operator and is lower per head. The flight is $1,150 for the whole helicopter, which is $575 each for two and $290 each for four. What you pay for is 30 minutes, no climb and a private cabin.
No. We do not land on the summit, in the crater or at public viewpoints. Landings happen only at approved sites. The Batur flight circles the cone and returns to its pad.
Flights can start from sunrise, about 05:50 in December and 06:35 in June and July, but the clearest air starts near 07:00 and the pilot decides on the day. If sunrise from the rim is your goal, the trek is the better choice.
On a flight morning we wait an hour if the forecast allows, offer the Ubud terraces flight at $500, or move you to the back-up date. Any part not flown is refunded. A trek has no such flexibility once you are on the trail.
Send two mornings, your guest count and your hotel area. We reply the same day with the pad, the aircraft and a fixed price, and re-check the volcano notices on the morning of the flight.
