Sunset Helicopter Flight
A golden-hour flight over the Bukit cliffs that lands at sunset. 18 or 30 minutes, whole helicopter, up to 4 guests.
The best Uluwatu sunset evening plan is a golden-hour helicopter flight that lifts off 20–30 minutes before sunset and lands as the sun reaches the horizon, then dinner on Jimbaran Bay or on a cliff. The 18-minute flight is $750 for the whole helicopter, up to 4 guests, and the 30-minute flight is $1,250. Flights are daylight-only, so the evening is built backwards from sunset, about 18:05 in June and 18:40 in late December. The kecak dance at the temple is normally timed around sunset and competes with the flight, so this plan puts them on separate evenings.

Arrive at the Bukit pad 45 minutes before sunset, fly a golden-hour loop along the cliffs, land as the sun touches the horizon, open sparkling wine on the ground and drive to a table at Jimbaran Bay or a cliff dinner. That is Plan A. Plan B skips the aircraft: a late-afternoon visit to the temple, the kecak dance at sunset and dinner afterwards. The two cannot share an evening, because both are timed to the same few minutes, and a flight must end by sunset.
Pick Plan A if you want the whole cliff wall and the light on the water. Pick Plan B if the performance matters more. If you have two evenings on the Bukit, do both, the flight first. The sunset flight page covers the flight itself, and the Uluwatu helicopter tour lists the landmarks in order.
Sunset is about 18:05 in June and about 18:40 in late December. Between those months the times fall between the two columns, and we calculate them for your date.
| Step | Relative to sunset | June (sunset about 18:05) | December (sunset about 18:40) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud | About 3 hours before | 15:05 | 15:40 |
| Leave Jimbaran, Nusa Dua or the Bukit | About 1.5 hours before | 16:35 | 17:10 |
| Arrive at the pad | 45 min before | 17:20 | 17:55 |
| Weights, briefing and headsets | 35 min before | 17:30 | 18:05 |
| Lift-off, 30-minute flight | 30 min before | 17:35 | 18:10 |
| Lift-off, 18-minute flight | 20 min before | 17:45 | 18:20 |
| Slow pass of the temple cliff | About 10 min after lift-off | 17:55 on the 18-minute flight | 18:30 on the 18-minute flight |
| Landing | At sunset | 18:05 | 18:40 |
| Sparkling wine and photos on the pad | Sunset to 15 min after | 18:05–18:20 | 18:40–18:55 |
| Car to dinner | About 20 min after sunset | 18:25 | 19:00 |
| Seated at the table | About 1 hour after sunset | 19:05 | 19:40 |
Times are examples, not promises. The pilot fixes the lift-off time on the day from wind, cloud and air traffic. Mountain cloud, haze on the horizon or a late arrival at the pad can all shorten the flight.
From the Bukit pad to Uluwatu and back, with one slow pass of the temple cliff and the Padang Padang coast. It suits a couple on a short evening and keeps dinner early.
The Uluwatu cliff first, then north along Jimbaran Bay toward the Kuta beach line before the turn home. More time with the low sun on the water, and two or three passes at the best spots.
Uluwatu Temple stands on a sea cliff about 70 m high, and the kecak dance is performed at the temple around sunset. Because the dance is timed to the same light as the flight, you cannot normally watch both on one evening. Check the current schedule, the start time and how ticket sales work before you plan, since performance times and entry arrangements can change.
The temple is a sacred site. Dress, access and photography follow the temple's own rules, and parts of it can close for ceremonies. Visitors are warned about macaques near the clifftop paths that grab loose items such as sunglasses and phones, so follow the staff's advice and keep your things zipped.
Arrive at the temple in the late afternoon, walk the clifftop path while the light is low and take your place at the dance in good time, as seats fill. After the dance, drive to dinner. If you still want the helicopter on that day, fly the daytime 18-minute Uluwatu route at $650 in the morning, when mountain cloud has not yet built and the air is clear.
Visit the temple in the afternoon, then leave for the pad in time for the briefing. You see the temple from the air at golden hour instead, and no helicopter lands in the temple grounds.
Book dinner for after the landing, not before. Jimbaran Bay has seafood cafés along the sand, with tables facing the water and the last colour in the sky. From the pad it is roughly half an hour by car, so check live traffic and tell the café your arrival time. For a quieter table, the Jimbaran area page lists what is close to the bay.
A private cliff dinner for two is the alternative. A set-up on approved private land starts from $450, and the menu is agreed in advance. If you would rather land at the table, the helicopter picnic and dinner package is $2,350, but it is a lunch or early dinner that ends in daylight, not a sunset dinner.
Add a ground photographer ($250) if you want the landing on camera. Sparkling wine ($120) and a bouquet ($60) wait with the crew and are opened on the ground, never in the cabin.
A flight cannot be recovered if you arrive late, because it must end by sunset. Plan the drive, not the flight.
| From | Typical car time to the Bukit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ngurah Rai Airport | 40–60 minutes to Uluwatu | Leave at least 1.5 hours before the pad time |
| Canggu | 1.25–2 hours | Leave about 3 hours before sunset and take a driver who knows the Bukit |
| Ubud | 1.5–2 hours | Leave about 3 hours before sunset, or fly; see the Ubud pick-up page |
| Nusa Dua | Shorter, but busy at the end of the day | Leave 1.5 hours before sunset |
| Jimbaran | Short in the day | Leave 1.5 hours before sunset |
Roads to the temple and the beach clubs fill before sunset, and leaving at sunset is usually slower than arriving. Book a private car from $50, priced by area, and message the pad if you are late.
Lift-off is 20–30 minutes before sunset, which is about 17:35–17:45 in June and about 18:10–18:20 in late December. Arrive at the pad 45 minutes before sunset for the briefing and headsets.
Normally not. The dance is timed around sunset, and a golden-hour flight lifts off 20–30 minutes before it and lands at sunset. Check the current kecak schedule, but plan the two on separate evenings.
From the pad to the table, about three hours: 45 minutes before sunset to arrive, an 18- or 30-minute flight, time on the pad after landing, and about half an hour to Jimbaran Bay. Add the drive from your hotel.
Roughly half an hour by car in the evening, depending on traffic. Check live traffic and book the table for about an hour after sunset.
The 18-minute golden-hour flight is $750 against $650 for the same flight by day. The extra covers the busiest slot of the day and the fixed lift-off time. See what a helicopter costs in Bali.
The pilot decides on the day. If the flight is unsafe, we move it to your back-up evening or refund the part not flown. Haze or cloud on the horizon does not always stop a flight, but it can flatten the colour.
Tell us the date, a back-up evening, the number of guests and where you are staying. We reply the same day with the pad, the lift-off time to the minute and a fixed price. Nothing is paid on this site.
